CLOTHES-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug 15, 1 911.
Application filed January 10, 1911. I Serial No. 601,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TrrUs A. NORTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Side, Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to clothes racks, and has for its object to provide a device of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth and which can be detachably connected to the top of a stove so that clothes can be suspended above the stove to dry.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes rack provided in a manner as hereinafter set forth with a plurality of suspension arms capable of being swung over a stove for suspending garments and furthermore adapted to be swung from over the stove and at a position at right angles to their suspending position so that when it is not desired to use the rack the suspension arms will not be in the way of a person when using the stove for cooking purposes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a clothes rack which is capable of being detachably secured in position, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up with respect to a stove or other support and inexpensive to manufacture.
Wit-h the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
Tn describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a clothes rack in accordance with this invention and in operative position and further showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a stove, Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section and partly broken away of the rack in operative position, Fig. 3 is an elevation broken away of the rack in an inoperative position, Fig. 4 is. a top plan of the upper portion of the rack when in an inoperative position, and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail.
A clothes rack in accordance with this invention includes a series of suspension members, a vertically adjust-able telescopic support, a shiftable coupling element, between the members and the support and a duplex clamp for maintaining the support in its adjusted posit-ion and for clamping T the support to the top of a stove, table or other supporting means for the rack.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the vertically adjustable telescopic support includes a hollow section 6 and a solid section 7, the latter extending into the former and adjustably connect therewith through the medium of a set screw 8 which extends into the section 6 and engages the section 7 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A coupling element is pivotally connected to the upper end of the section 7 of the vertically adjustable support and the said element consists of a pair of arms 9, 10 between which extends the upper end of the section 7 The upper end of the section 7 is ivotally connected to one end of each of the arms 9, 10 through the medium of a pin 11 Formed integral with the other end of the arms 9,.10 is a segment-shaped plate 12 provided with a series of openings 13. The plate 12 extends at right angles with respect to the arms 9, 10.
The coupling member is capable of being swung to a position so that the arms 9, 10 will extend in parallelism with respect to the section 7 and is furthermore adapted to be shifted so that the arms 9, 10 will be disposed at right angles with respect to the section 7 When the arms 9, 10 extend in parallelism with respect to the section 7 the plate 12 is disposed at right angles with respect to said section and when the arms 9, 10 project at right angles with respect to the section 7 the plate 12 is disposed in parallelism with respect to said sect-ion. The coupling element not only constitutes a means for connecting the plurality of suspension members with the vertically adjustable support, but the plate 12 of the said element acts as a supporting means for the said suspension members.
Each of the suspension members is indicated by the reference character 14 and is in the form of a rod having a right angularly disposed inner end 15 which extends through an opening 13. The end 15 of each of the members 14: is provided with a head 16 which abuts against one face of the plate 12 whereby the member is secured to the plate 12. The openings 13 are so disposed in the plate 12 that a portion of the plate supports the members when these latter are positioned over the stove 17 as shown in Fig. 1. The suspensionmembers 141 are capable of being moved away and toward each other as the connection between said members and the plate 12 is somewhat loose. 7
When the coupling element is swung to a position so that the arms 9, 10 will extend in parallelism with the section 7, the members 14: are supported over the stove and in a position to suspend the garments, and
when the coupling element is shifted so that the arms 9, 10 will extend at right angles with respect to the section 7, the members 141 are moved from their suspension position and extend in parallelism with respect to the vertically adjustable support.
The duplex clamp comprises a top member 18, bottom member 19 and an intermediand with which engages a clamping screw 23. The outer end of the member 19 is provided with an opening in alinement with the opening 21 and through the alining openings of the members 18 and 19 extends the hollow section 6 of the vertically adjustable support. The hollow section 6 is clamped in its adjusted position through the medium of the screw 23. The inner end of the bottom member 19 is formed with a screw threaded opening through which extends a screw 24: so that the clamp canbe detachably secured to the stove or other support.
What I claim is 7 A clothes rack comprising a vertically adjustable support, means for fixing the support in its adjusted position and for detachably connecting the support to a supporting means, a pair of arms pivoted to the upper end of said support, a plate formed integral with said arms and disposed at right angles with respect thereto and capable of being shifted to extend at right angles with respect to the support and parallel with the support, and a plurality of suspension arms loosely connected to said plate and capable of being shifted to a position at right angles with respect to the support and to a position parallel with the support by virtue of their attachment to the plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
