To 1/ irliom it may concern:
lie it known that l, RUDENZ S. DOUTIIAT, cltlZt'ii of the United States, residing at Huntington. in the county of Cabell and t tate oi West Virginia, have invented certain new and use'tul Improvements in Typelt'riting ltliltlllllvti; andIdoherehy declare lllt following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enaid others skilled in the art to which it up pertains to make and use the same.
.dv invention relates to. typewriting machines and consists of certain new and usetnl in-iprrwements in attachments for that class oi machines. wherein a single key hoard is used'and a s tting mechanism is provided :lor changing the relative position of the platen or the type basket, in order to permit a capital letter or other selected charactor to la positioned for printing, and wherein a depressihle space bar or key is located in i'ront' ot tholcey hoard for spacing the writing.
.dv inventi n relates more particularly to that class of machines wherein the platen or t'vpc asket is shifted in a suhstantially horiontal direction to etl'cct the printingof a capital letter or other selected character.
The main object of my invention is to increasc the ease and speed of operating niachines oi this class. by providing devices by which the shift mechanism may be operated by means of a depressihle shift har, located dirc tlv in front of the key board. and ex tendlnlj from about the center of the Front to the lel t hand margin oi said key hoard and on a line with the space bar. I acconn plish this object in my preferred form oi" device h v dividing the space bar. ordinarilv provided for such machines. at ahout its central portion. and using the left subdivision of said space har. when properly connected to coacting parts. 'l'or operating the shift; mechanism, and the right hand subdivision i oi said space bar, for the spacing required in operating 1 spacing being accomplished by the downward pressure of the left subdivision to effect the shitting from lower to upper case 3 for capitals or other selected charm-tors and by the downward pressure or movement of the right. hand subdivision for necessary spacing. 'lhisarrangement is especially dcsirahlc in order that; the operation of shifting. which at present is attained by the use he machine. the shifting and l ,upon 'the space bar 13. the spacing will he l l l i l l l i by means of the bent rod c which is secured key aard, and avoiding the present. objec- G0 ti of the ordinary machine, wherein it is necessary to vary the fingering of the key board in the operation of the shifting mechanism. thus retarding and hindering the operation of the machine.
My invention has for its further object, the production and arrangement of parts to accomplish the desired results, which may be attached to machines already in use, in a simple and inexpensive manner.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings, and described the same with reference thereto, in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a type writing machine with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view oi a moditic tion of the same. Fig, 3 is a modification of Fig. 1 and shows the connecting rods made integral.
Similar letters of reference indicate identical parts throughout.
represents the main frame of a type writing machine of the class ahove referred 85 to and T3, l) space and shift bars respectively, the two filling the space occupied by the usual space bar, in machines of ordinary constrimtion. The space bar B is secured at one end to the shifting rod 7 of the machine, and at its other end to the bent rod B which is secured to the shift rod 7) corresponding to the rod 7). a portion of said rod 7) being removed. The connection hetwccn the rod B and the rod 71 may be effected in any desired manner. hilt in"the l'orm shown, I provide the rod l1 with an extension c having projecting flanges which may he hcnt around the rod 7/ to form a secure joint. as clearly shown in Fig. l oi the drawings. l t is obvious that by pressing downward etl'ected in the usual manner. The shift. har l) is connected to the shifting mechanism to the shift bar I] in a manner similar to that. described in regard to the spacing mechanism. The opposite end ot the space har -l has secured to it a short connecting rod (5 which is securely i'astei'icd to the shifthar this reversal of the arrangement of the saiol I connecting'rocls-does not-affect the appli-i (Z corresponding to the bar Ihe mocleof operating the shift'bar D is the same as that relating to the space bar B,"

connected to the rod 5 by ineans of the bent rod B, the otherflend of said 'space 1'0- ha'r being already connected to the rod 5. The other portion of the original spacewbar.
- ;1'nay he used-as the shift bar D and connected to the shifting mechanism "as already described.

npon machine's, instead of having-to rely ,entlrely upon my devices for operating the shift mechanis1n.- It is alsoobviOns. that lnst'eacl of providing connecting-parts B and ,D, I may use an nite'gral'connecting rod he nt i'n proper form anchconnecting-the rod,cZ with d and a. similai" rod to connect therod' bwith b (as illustrated in Fig.
vThe. form of my invention as above described is particularly applicable to 1na-- chines. alreacly in .use,- the changes being readily effected anclwi th slight expense.
- Where my invention isto be appliedin the construction of new machines, I employ the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings; In this form I'provide a space bar 'E which: islocated .at the right of the mai rLetters Patent i's'z 1 i'nF-ig. l, I have shown the .eonnectingrcds; for the spacin mechanism outside of they connecting for s! for the shiftingmechanisIn, hut in some machines vthis arrange-' hinafion [with 'means' tor -operating the shiftingand spacing nechanisnnof a shiftthe front e l? chine ancl Withrn the frame A and connect Q the same i with the- .space mechanism by mechanism-by means of the connecting bars 9, grfThemocle offoperat'ion is the same as that already described. 1
