FLOORING NAIL-SET.
Application filed February 7, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911. Serial No. 607,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHANCELLOR B. WEE- DON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richardsville, in the county of Culpeper and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flooring Nail- Sets, of which the following is a specification.
Boards, strips or like material having tongued and grooved matching edges are secured to sleepers, joist-s, or like supports by means of nails which are driven into the angles formed between the tongues and the adjacent edge portions above said tongues, the heads of such nails being driven home either by the poll of a hammeror hatchet or by means of a punch. The poll of a hammer or hatchet is most generally resorted to since the work is expedited, but the tongues of the material are broken, bruised or marred as well as the adjacent edge portions of the material. Nail punchers when used frequently slip, thereby resulting in injury to the fingers or a marring of the material.
The present invention provides a tool which may be used with perfect safety so as to prevent injury to the hand or a marring of the material, said tool being of such formation as to admit of the work being rapidly performed.
In accordance with this invention a nail set or punch is provided having a guide or rest which is adapted to hold the tool in proper position so that the force of the blow delivered may drive the head of the nail home in the material without marring the same or endangering the hand .by slipping, said tool having a projecting portion which forms a rest and a guide.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the tool.
The tool comprises a body 1 and a. setting point 2. A projection 3 is formed at one side of the body 1 adjacent the point 2 and serves both as a rest and a guide and is adapted to engage the sleeper or other support to which the flooring or like material is to be secured. The projection 3 has an inclined edge 4 which comes in contact with the sleeper or like part, the inclination being such as to hold the tool at the proper angle when in position for setting the nail. The projection 3 has an extension 5 to pass beneath the tongue of the material and thereby prevent tipping of the tool when delivering a blow thereon.
In the operation of the tool when it is required to drive the head of the nail home the tool is placed in position, about as indicated in Fig. 1, with the setting point 2 resting upon the head of the nail and the inclined edge 4 in contact with the sleeper or like part, after which a blow is delivered upon the outer end of the tool, which results in setting the nail in the well known manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A nail set comprising a body having a setting point and formed at one side with a projection having an inclined edge to rest upon the sleeper or like part to hold the tool in proper position and prevent slipping terial and prevent tipping of the tool when thereof. 0 in operation. 10 2. A nail set comprising a body having a In testimony whereof I afliX my signature setting point and formed at one side with a in presence of two witnesses. projection having an inclined edge, said pr0- CHANCELLOR B. WEEDON. jeotion being further provided with an eX- Witnesses: tension which is spaced from the setting J. R. FIELD, point to pass beneath the tongue of the ma- GEORGE S. CHrLDs.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of I'atents, Washington, D. G.
