AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KAvAKos, citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amusement devices and more especially to canals adapted to have a constant stream of water flowing through same to carry boats and the object of the invention is to provide means where by the boats after reaching the end of the course are elevated and started again with out obliging the passengers to leave them, as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the elevating device. Fig. 2 is a sectional View through same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the canal showing the elevating structure.
In the operation of these canals it has been customary to provide a paddle wheel to drive the water from the lower section to the elevated starting end and when the boat which has gone through the canal reaches this end, it is necessary for the passengers to leave the boat and if they desire to again make the trip they are obliged to go to the elevated section and there reenter. The present invention is adapted to obviate this inconvenience to passengers who again desire to make the trip and instead of emptying the boat as heretofore done I provide elevating means to carry the boat from the lower section to the upper end of the canal and again start it on its trip.
The upper end of the canal 5 is provided with a series of rollers 6 on to which the boat is launched and down which it travels to the canal 7. The canal may-be of any desired shape or course and receives its supply of water at the upper end from any desired source, thereby pumping a fresh supply of water or by driving water into it by means of a paddle wheel located in the lower section 8. The end of the lower section is provided with a frame 9 comprising rollers 10 which are loosely j ournaled in the side of the frame. An elevating frame 11 Specification of Letters Patent.

is also provided and which supports drums 12 and 13 carrying ropes 14 attached to the frame 9 for the purpose of elevating same and the drum 13 provided with a crank arm 15 for rotating same. The shaft of the drum 13 carries a sprocket wheel 16 which through medium of the chain 17 rotates a larger sprocket wheel 18 on the shaft of the drum 12 so that the drum 13 is adapted to rotate faster than the drum 12 to wind up the rope 14 at that end of the frame 9, and as the frame ascends it is tilted in order to cause the boat 19 to run down the rollers 10 and on to the rollers 6 from which it enters the canal 7 preparatory to its trip through same. By this means the passengers may again be started on the trip and make any number of trips without being obliged to leave the boat as has been the practice heretofore, thus enabling the proprietor to secure a greater number of passengers than if he was obliged to get rid of them at the end of each trip.
The boat 19 may be of any desired con struction and arranged to carry any number of people. The elevator may be also arranged so as to be inconspicuous or may be of such artificial construction as to be an ornament to the device.
It is obvious that other modifications may be adopted or variations made in the construction without departing from the essential features above described.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. In an amusement device, the combination with a canal having one end elevated, of rollers at the elevated end, an elevator for the boats, rollers carried by the elevator, and means for tipping the elevator as it moves upward.
2. In an amusement device, the combination with a canal having an elevated starting point, an elevator for boats at the end of the canal, drums carrying ropes to operate the elevator, and means for operating one drum faster than the other.
3. In an amusement device, the combination with a canal carrying a stream of water, of rollers at the starting end of the canal, an elevator with rollers at the starting end, drums carrying ropes to operate the elevator, a crank arm and sprocket Wheel Signed at New York in the county of on the shaft of one of the drums, a larger New York and State of New York this sixth sprocket Wheel on the shaft of the other day of March A.
