To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS B. Rosntr- STOCK, a citizenof the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, in he State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Toilets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention has for its, ultimate purpose to provide for the complete disinfection of all matter received in the bowl or hopper before it is discharged, and has been developed with especial reference to its application to toilets of railway cars through which germs of disease may be spread over a great extent of territory and in the use of which, therefore, there isspeeial need of complete disinfection before the discharge of the contents.
In accordanace with the invention there is rovided, in addition to the usual bowl or opper, a secondary chamber in which the contents of the bowl or. hopper are received and in which they are subjected, for a sufii cient period of time to produce substantial results, to the action of a suitable germioide or disinfectant, before they are discharged upon the ground. Furthermore, inasmuch as no ordinary germicide or disinfectant, such as it is practicable to use, can penetrate within a reasonable time solid or semisolid masses, provision is made whereby all such masses are thoroughly broken up and thoroughly mixed with the disinfectant so that the entire contents of the secondary chamber are thoroughly disinfected before they are discharged.
The invention will be more fully eX- plained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows, partly in section .and partly in elevation, a toilet equipped with the invention.
The toilet itself may be of any suitable kind. The toilet (1 shown in the drawing comprises the usual bowl or hop-per or receptacle b, the contents of which are temporarily retained by a valve 0 and prevented thereby from passing through the opening cl. The valve 0, if used, may also be of any suitable character and is shown as pivoted at one edge and having an arm 0 which is connected by a link 0 with an. operating lever 6, so that as the handle of the operating lever is thrust down the valve is opened. A water supply for flushing purposes is connected with the hopper, as indicated by the pipe 7, which, in the construction shown, is provided with a valve, as at f, which is connected by a link f with the lever e, so that when the handle of the lever e is depressed and the valve 0 is opened, water is admitted for flushing out the bowl or hopper 6. Obviously the toilet may be of the ordinary siphon form in which no valve is employed and the supply of water for flushing purpurposes may be controlled by any suitable means. The contentsof the bowl or hopper b are discharged, either directly or indirectly, into a secondary receptacle or chamber g which, in the construction shown, is
located below the hopper b. The chamber i stantial period of time, or until the bowl or hopper b is again emptied of its contents. To this end it has an outflow 9 connected with the chamber 9 at or near the top thereof.
In order that the contents of the chamber 9 may be disinfected therein, there is connected to the chamber 9 a supply of asuitable disinfecting fluid, such as a solution of formaldehyde from which preferably a measured quantity of the disinfectant, proportioned to .the capacity of the receptacle or chamber g, is delivered to the chamber 9 each time that the contents of the bowl or hopper b are discharged into the chamber a. In the arrangement shown in the drawing the supply vessel It, for the disinfectant fluid, is connected by a pipe h with the chamber 9 and at a convenient point in the pipe h is introduced an ordinary measuring valve k which may be operated by the lever e. As it is desirable that the disinfectant be admitted to the chamber 9 after the contents of the bowl or hopper b have been discharged into it, the lever e is provided on its 'rear end with a pivoted, spring-pressed came toe e which yields upon contact with the plunger h of the measuring valve 72, during the upward movement of the cam toe. or when the valve 0 is being opened, but is held from yielding so as to operate the measuring valve when the lever is being moved to close the valve 0. The disinfectant is therefore introduced into the chamber 9 so as to act upon the contents of the hopper .so that such contents may be thoroughly disinfected in a reasonably short space of time, there is provided in the chamber 9 a stirrer or agitator '2' which thoroughly and intimate y mingles the disinfecting fluid with the contents of the chamben Obviously the character of the stirrer or agitator may be varied to suit different conditions of use.
Inthe construction represented in the draw- P ing, the stirrer or agitator consists of a spiral web mounted on a vertical spindle i which pro'ects downwardly through a suitable stu 1g box in the bottom of the chamber 9 and is driven through bevel gears 11 and a shaft i by a small electric motor '5. The stirrer or agitator may be operated continuously, or it may be operated at intervals preferably immediately after the discharge of the contents of the bowl or hopper 6 into the chamber 9. The operation of the agitator at intervals may be determined by any suitable means. .In the arrangement shown, the connections 7c, is, of the motor 2' include a suitable battery is? and contacts 72 and k, which may be bridged by a switch member is". The latter is arranged to slide in contact with. the contacts 70 k, and to keep the circuit closed for such period of time as it is found desirable to have the agitator or stirrer operated. For this purpose the switch member is is carried by a plunger rod Z which has at its lower end a piston l traveling in a spring dash-pot l of ordinary construction, while at the upper end the plunger rod Z carries a wheel I with which cooperates a cam Z which may be mounted on the door m of the room in which the toilet is placed. Therefore,'whenever the door is opened, the circuit of the motor is closed and v the agitator is operated for a sufiicient period of time to thoroughly mix the contents of the chamber 9. In this arrangement provision is thus made for the agitation of .the contents of the chamber 9 which have already been subjected to the action of the disinfectant for a reater or less length of time,*immediately before such contents are discharged'through the entrance of a new charge,"and also for the a itation of the contents of the chamber 9 w ich have just been received from the bowl or hopper b.
It will be understood that various changes in detailsof construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, which is not limited to the particular construction which has beenchosen for illustration and explanation herein of the nature of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sanitary toilet, the combination of a bowl or hopper, a secondary'chamber or receptacle into which the contents of the bowl or hopper are discharged and in which such contents are retained for a eriod of time, means for supplying a disin ectant to said chamber, and means for thoroughly mixing the contents of the chamber with the disinfectant.
2. In a sanitary toilet, the combination of a bowl or hopper, a secondary chamber or receptacle into which the contents of the bowl or hopper are discharged and in which suchcontents are retained for a period of time, means for supplying a disinfectant to said chamber, an agitator in said chamber and means for operating said agitator.
3. In a sanitary toilet, the combination of a bowl or hopper, a secondary chamber or receptacle into which the contents -of the bowl or hopper are discharged and in which such contents are retained for a eriod of time, means for supplying a disin ectantto said chamber, an agitator in said chamber, means for operating said agitator and means for determining the operation of the agitator at intervals.
4. In a sanitary toilet, the combination of a bowl or hopper, a secondary chamber or rece tacle into which the contents of the bowlor hopper are discharged and in which such contents are retained for a period of time, means for's'upplying a disinfectant to said chamber, an agitator in said chamber, a motor for driving said agitator, a door, and means controlled by the movement of said door for determining the operation of the motor.
