SAFETY SACK-FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1910.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Serial No. 558,434.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HARRY L. LIPPERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Sack-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sack fasteners, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will dispense with the use of cords, wire and analogous unreliable fastening elements.
With the above and other objects in view which will. appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, which, when combined produces a removable sack fastener which will easily and effectively retain the mouth of the sack tightly closed and which may be readily removed from the sack when desired.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the showing therein is merely illustrative and that the minor details of construction, within the scope of the appended claims, may be resorted to if desired.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device applied to a sack. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, in its locked position, parts being shown in section. Fig. 1 is a similar view, the locking jaws being open.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary grain or other bag and 2 the bag mouth fastening device. The fastening device comprises essentially a pair of curved flattened plates designated by the numerals 3 and 4c. These curved plates have one of their ends pivotally connected together as at 5, while the opposite or free ends of each of the plates are bent at a right angle to their main or body portion to pro vide the extending lips 6. Each of the lips 6 are provided with alining openings, that of the plate 3 being elongated as designated by the numeral 7, while the opening upon the opposite lip is smaller and rounded and provided with interior threads 8.
The numeral 9 designates the locking key. This key 9 comprises a headed element provided with a threaded extension having a ring or collar adjacent the head of the member. Thatportion of the key between its head and collar is adapted to be positioned within the elongated slot 7 while the outer, threaded portion of the key is adapted to engage the threads 8 of the opposite ear 6. The threaded member of the key is provided with a plurality of transverse openings 10, any one of which being adapted for the reception of the wire of a seal 11, so that the contents of the bag 1 cannot be tampered with without detection.
The plate 2, adjacent the lip 6 is provided with an inwardly projecting pin 12 and the plate 5 is provided with a socket 13 adapted to receive the pin 12. By this arrangement it will be noted that the pin 12 effectively and at all times retains the mouth of the bag within the space between the curved plates 8 and 4:.
Both of the plates 3 and 4 are provided with inwardly projecting fingers 14 and 15 and the inner edge of the plate 2 between the pin 12 and its finger 14: is serrated to provide the teeth 16. The inner edge of the plate 3 between its finger 15 and its pivot is also provided with teeth 17. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that the fingers 14 and 15 force the mouth of the bag tightly into engagement with the inner curved edges of the plates and into contact with the serrations so that the plates tightly compress the mouth of the said bag and eifectively seal the same.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is The hereinafter described structure of sack mouth fasteners, comprising a pair of pivoted curved flattened plates, said plates having their free ends bent at right angles to provide lips, a locking key for the lips, a pin upon one of the plates for closing the opening between the plates, each of said plates having their inner edges provided toward the teeth provided upon the first with teeth, the teeth upon one of the plates named plate. 10 being arranged forward of the teeth upon In testimony whereof I aflix my signature the opposite plate, and each of the plates in presence of two witnesses.
being formed with inwardly projecting HARRY L. LIPPERT. fingers, the finger of one of the plates pro- Witnesses:
jecting toward the teeth of the second plate, ALMA PETERSON,
and the finger of the second plate projecting ISABELLA R. HOUGH.
