IMPROVEMENT ME'rHo'D. or STRENGTHENING BoBBINs on sPooLs.
The Schedine referred :to in these Letters Pabenb and making parent' the same To all whom it may conce-ral- Be it known that I, ALBERT'HALLOWELL, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented ,certain new and useful lmprovements in Bobbins or Spools, offwhich the following is a full, clearand enactI description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in whichy Figures 1,52, and 3 represent each. a central sectional elevation. y i
Figures 4 and 5 represent-each an end vleiv.
This invention hasfor its-object to cover or partly cover, ,and to strengthen4 and protect one oribothof the heads or ends of the bobbin or spool, thereby pre` venting splits, cracks, or roughness, which materially injure or spoilthe bobbinbeibre it is half worn.`
This invention consists in the method, substantially as described, of strengthening, protecting, and preserving one or both `ends or' heads of the bobbin or` spool, by means of a metal hoop, hand, or ring, a, or that and a' protecting plate; c, combined, and either of these cast onto the head or end, and i'n'to an annular groove previously formed in the substance 'of the bobhilL or spool for the reception of the metal, which, while in a melted state, tillstliegroove and ,forms the strengthening ring, which slninks',iin cooling, binds the wood and prevents it splitting and protects it.
To apply this ring or hoop tothe head or end of the hobbin, after turning the groove, the head or end which is to be hooped, or hooped and plated is placed in a common metal mold, hinged or pinned together in the usual way. ,A
Some portion of the mold A must lit some part of i the bobbin, say the barrel B, leaving a suicient open spacebetween the interior-.of the mold and the exterior of the head or end to be filled with melted metal and form the' ring, or that, and the plate combined.
The metal is poured into the mold through a 'suit'af ble gate, filling the open space in the mold above re ferred to,'and forming' the desired ring or'ring-and plate combined, ally as clearly shown in the drawingslv The mold isthen opened, the bobbin' removed, and any surplus metal removed in the usual way of turning or otherwise finishing the ring, or that and the plate, to the desired degree of thickness, form, or smoothness.
The metal nsedto cast the ring or the ring and plate must be that-willich is'fusible at a 10W' degree oi' heat, dso as not to burnthe wood, and I generally use a composition of tin, z'inc, andl bismnth, or that which is known by persons skilled in the art of casting in molds aswhite-metal, which isA equally as good. In fact,'any metal which melts at a low temperature will answer the purpose described; but iron, copper, brass, or 'such metals as require a highdegree of heat to melt them, will not answer the purpose.
External grooves gmay be cast inthe metal hoop or plating, to serve the purpose of holding the bobbin onto theshnttle-spindle or for any purpose des'lhed..
, In all-cases I cast the metalinto an annular groove, as shown, so as to .hold the ring orthe ring and plate firmly on the head or end of the bobbin or spool.
I claim the method, substantially as described, of
