UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. WESTBROOK, OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.
CANOPY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. VVEsT- BROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Gullford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in canopies adapted to be placed on abed, crib or other support as a protection against flies, mosquitos, etc. and it has for its object to provide such a device that may be readily opened out for use or collapsed for transportation or storage.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts, all as will be now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the present invention,-Figure 1- is a perspective of the canopy in open position; Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the hinged side supports for the frames, the frames being partly broken away and shown in open position with one form of lock; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the support, with the frames in open position, showing a modified form of lock; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the frames in closed position; and Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 00-00 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the side pieces or supports for the netting frames or bows, consist of two members A and B, pivoted or hinged together as at C. These hinged members are formed preferably of sheet metal bent to proper shape. Bows or frames D, E formed of metal bars and bent to the desired shape, are fixedly secured at each end to the hinged members A and B, preferably by soldering. These frames when the canopy is opened out, as in Fig. 1, form a base or support for the canopy, as will be readily understood. Intermediate frames F, G, H and I, also formed of metal bars and bent to proper shape, are pivotally mounted on the hinged side pieces,

the pivotal connection being secured by formlng eyes f, g, h and i, at the ends of the frames, which take over rivets J and K. Preferably the eyes are flattened so that the ends of two frames may be secured to one rivet, as shown in Fig. 5. The frames are covered with netting L or other fabric which is secured to the frames in any suitable way. Preferably the netting extends below the bottom frames D, E, in the form of a flounce or valance N, so that it will effectually close any space between the bottom of the canopy and the bed or other support upon which the canopy may be placed.
In order to hold the hinged side supports open or closed a lock is provided which in one embodiment consists of a spring 0 formed of a piece of wire of suitable size and weight, bent to form a coil 0, the ends of the wire being crossed and secured about the rivets J K beneath the heads 0 thereof.
In Fig. 4 there is shown amodified form of lock, consisting of a hooked latch P pivotally mounted on one hinge member as at p and cotiperating with a headed stud p on the other hinge member.
From the above description it will be seen that when the frames are opened out the frames G and D, fixedly secured to the side pieces, form a fixed base or support, the intermediate pivoted frames assuming the proper position to hold the netting under tension. The device consists of few parts, can be readily folded into small compass and packed in a trunk or carried from place to place.
Having thus described the invention, what.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device such as described, the combination with the hinged side pieces or supports, of frames fixedly secured to said hinged pieces, and intermediate frames pivotally mounted on said hinged pieces.
2. In a device such as described, the combination with the hinged side pieces or frame supports, of frames fixedly secured to said hinged side pieces, whereby when in open position said frames will constitute a base for the canopy, intermediate frames pivotally mounted on said side pieces, and a lock for holding said side pieces in either open or closed position.
3. In a device such as described, the combination with the hinged side pieces or frame supports, of frames secured fixedly for holding saidside pieces in either open or to said hinged side pieces, whereby When in closed position.
0 en osition said rames Will constitute a base for the canopy, intermediate frames FRANK WESTBROOK' pivotally mounted on said side pieces, and Witnesses:
a coil spring having its ends crossed and se- W. M. CoMBs,
cured one to each member of the side pieces WVM. RIDENHOUR.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). C.
