Description
' craindgaat EvERE'rT c. HAMMOND, or oswneo, NEW YORK.
Letters' Patent N 101,261, lated March 29, 1870.
IMPROlVBMENT IN PUMPS.`
lThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same. n
To all whom tt may concern.- v
Be it known that 1Evnnn'r'r C. HAMMOND, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a nmvaud useful Improvement', in'A Vessel or ShipPump; and I do hereby declare' that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptioh thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings tin-ming part ot' this specification, in whieh 7 Figui-e1 is a vertical section of 1n y invention, and
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line x x in iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
, In sail-vessels of a flat build, where bilge-pumps are required, the bilge-pumps have heretofore been placed at the sides of the vessel. But in bad weather, when the lee bilge-pump is required, it is bad to get at, as the leeside ofthe deck is low iu the water, and is frequently buried or swept by the sea. And in placing bilge-pumps at the sides of a vessel, the plank- `sheer has to be out, which it also desirable to avoid.
'lo obviate these objections I connect the bilgepipe with one of the main pumps iu the center of the vessel, and provide a valve in connection therewith, by which the main pump will Ina-ke connection with either of Athe bilgepipes, or with its own pipe, at the will of the operator. And in this manner a main pump is made to do duty of two bilge-pulnps in addition to its first duty, which is that ot' an even-keel or central pump, as hereinafter more fully explains-d.
1n the accompanying drawings- AAis adoublebarreled pump, the two barrels having a common discharge-pipe, a, and both taking water from a single supply-pipe.
' To the bottom of this pump a straight central pipe, B is connected, and also two bilge-pipes. C o, and in a lower chamber, k, fig. 1, which is common to both barrels of the pump, is a circular valve, e, in which are three holes or ports, j m n, iigi?. This valve or plate` e has its lower face ground to cover the upper ends 'of the pipes C B c tightly, and is suspended on a central pivot or spindle, f, in such manner as to he turuedon its seat by a hand-wheel, g. By placing the valve e in the position shown in g. 2, the pump makes connection with the, central pipe B, and communication with the two bilge-pipes is shut off, thus making the pump an ordinary central or main pump for taking water from the center of the vessel. But by turning the valve e to the right, so that thepipe B is shut off, and the port a brought into connection with the bilge-pipc c, then the pump is converted into a starboard bilge-pump. And by turning the valve to the left, so as to bring the portj into communication with pipe C, fig. 2, then the pump is converted into a larboard bilge-pump; and in this manner the local action of the pump is changed at pleasure, and the main pump A A is made to perform its ordinary duty and also that of two bilge-pumps, and the ohjectiousheretofore mentioned are entirely obvia-ted, as by these means the bilge-punips are operated in the middle ot' the vessels deck.
The two bilge-pumps may unite in a common pump at the center of the deck, without the center-pump or pipe B; however, l consider the method shown as the mostpreferahle.
Any wear ot' valve e is taken up by a setscrew, h,
fig. l, which presses the valve down upon its seat, and
this set-screw can also be used for securing the valve in any one ofthe three positions.
Having thus described my, invention,
That I claiinns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe bent bilgepipes C c and pipe B, in conibiuatiou with the pump A, valve e, and set-screw It, all arranged, constructed andoperated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invent-ion signed b v me this 20th day of November, 1868.
` EVER-ETT C. HAMMOND.
Witnesses z R. Hlusn, l?. A. Monter.
