COMBINED ADDING APPARATUS AND PENCIL-BOX.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4:, 1912.
Application filed May 16, 1910. Serial No. 561,583.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonc KRtieER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Gross -Lichterfelde, near Berlin, Germany, have invented a new and useful Combined Adding Apparatus and Pencil- Box, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a combined adding apparatus and encil box for children; said apparatus diii ering from similar existing apparatus in that the rod or rods, carrying the beads is or are turned into the box while out of use, so that the childs attention is not attracted by the beads and no cause is given for play during lessons.
I attain my object by forming the pencil box with an extra compartment in which one or more U shaped rods, furnished with beads, are pivoted in such a manner that, after removing the lid, said rod or rods can be turned up for use, the lid is then re-introduced and holds the rod in position.
My combined adding apparatus and pencil box is illustrated in the annexed drawings.
Figure 1, is a cross-section on line AB of Fig. 4; Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1 but with the parts ready for use; Fig. 3 is a front elevation as in use; Fig. 4: is a plan with the lid removed.
Pins a and b are driven in the ends of the pencil box so as to pass through and retain the eyes of the U-shaped rod, or rods, 0 disposed in an inner recess or compartment 0Z surrounding the pencil compartment. Thus, when the adding apparatus is not required for use, the lid 6 hides same. Slots are cut in the side of the box, near the pins a and Z), to receive the upright portion of rod 0 when the adding apparatus is in use.
For use, the lid e is taken out and the rod, or rods 0 turned up as shown in Fig. 3; the lid 6 being then slid back so as to hold the rod, or rods a steady.
It is advantageous to so shape the recess 03 as to prevent the beads from rattling within the box.
I claim:
1. A combined adding apparatus and pencil box, comprising an inner U shaped recess, a pencil compartment within said recess, pins fixed in the box across the ends of said recess, a U shaped rod engaging with said pins, beads on said rod, slots in the side of the box receiving the upright portions of the rod, when the latter is turned up, and a sliding lid for holding the rod in an erected position, and for the purpose specified.
2. Acombined adding apparatus and pencil box comprising an inner U-shaped recess, a pencil compartment within said recess, pins fixed in the box across the ends of said recess, a U-shaped rod engaging with said pins, beads on said rod, and a sliding lid for holding the rod in an erected position, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORG KRUGER.
Witnesses HENRY HASPER, WOLDEMAR HAUPT.
