GEORGE W. WEBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SARDINE-CAN COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1912.
Application filed June 29, 1907. Serial No. 381,501.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sardine-Can Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of sardine can covers having key opening tongues projecting from the soldering flange of the cover to open fhe can by winding the cover around the rey.
As sardine can covers have heretofore been made, the tongue projects materially beyond the longitudinal edge of the cover so that the covers cannot be made or cut from a strip in an ordinary strip feed press with out considerable waste, owing to the fact that the strip must be materially wider than the cover in order to accommodate the laterally projecting part of the tongue. To obviate this waste, I form the tongue at one of the corners of the cover wholly within the transverse and longitudinal marginal lines of the cover so that the cover can be out without any unnecessary Waste from a rectangular blank or from a strip corresponding to the width of the cover.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a strip of tin plate from which the sardine covers are to be cut showing a series of covers cut therefrom, withthe tongues thereof lying within the transverse and longitudinal marginal. lines or edges of the cover. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing one of the covers.
In the drawing, A represents the tin plate strip from which the covers are cut, and B the rectangular covers cut therefrom, each having an integral tongue 5 lying within the intersection of the longitudinal marginal line Z) and transverse marginal line or edge 5 of each of the covers. The cover B is countersunk and has a marginal soldering flange b surrounding the countersunk portion Z2 I claim A rectangular sardine can roll-top cover having a central countersunk port-ion surrounded by a marginal soldering flange parallel with said central portion, and provided with rounded corners and an integral tongue projecting from said marginal flange at one of the corners, said tongue lying entirely within the transverse and longitudinal marginal edges of said flange and said tongue having concavely curved edges merging into the convexly curved edges of the rounded corner of said flange from which said tongue projects, substantially as specified.
