TALLY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed August 23, 1909. Serial No. 514,092.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE T. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockland, county of Knox, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tally Devices, of.
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tally devices and particularly to a shipping tally in which passing units operate by their own weight the counting mechanism.
In the handling of various kinds of goods and particularly in shipping articles which are trucked out, it is necessary to keep a final count or tally at or near the points of loading. This is particularly well illustrated in the shipping of such goods as lime which is loaded in either bagged or barreled form onto car or vessel by trucks. In such use as well as in other businesses it is a matter of great diiticulty to keep track of a large number of men making quick trips back and forth in a crowded shed and it was to the end of providing a simple and accurate means of tallying such that I devised my present invention which in no manner interferes, impedes or retards the movements of the trucks.
Although capable of variety of form and construction I shall attempt in the following specification to set forth but one embodiment of my device which I will describe with reference to the accompanying drawings in which particular parts are designated by reference numerals and which is a front elevation.
1 is a base plate preferably made of heavy metal which will lie flat upon the ground or floor and afford a stable support for an upright 2. At the upper end of the upright is an arm 3 extending laterally from the upright and serving as a support for the registering mechanism and a guide for the balance arm 1 which is pivoted at 5 to the upright.
6 is a depressible plate pivoted at 7 7 in the flange of angle irons 8 which are riveted across the plate 1 and to handles 9 are attached for moving the tally from place to place.
. he angle iron nearer to the upright 2 is opened to permit the play of a pin 10 set on the edge of the plate 6 in advance of its pivot and connected by a joint 11 to a rod 12 which is cut and provided with a turn buckle 13 to permit its adjustability. At its upper end, the rod 12 is pivoted to the short end of the arm l.
15 is a register having an actuating arm 16.
17 is a lever pivoted between its ends in a bracket 19 and connected at one end by a link 18 to the arm 16 and at the other end by the link 20 to the arm 4.
26 are suitable braces for the upright 2.
In operation my tally is set in the path of the loaded trucks and transversely disposed so as to present the plates as a slight incline. The weights are adjusted to sustain the plate 6 almost but not quite up to the unit weight of the loads which it is to tally. This permits the device to be set so that the tally will not be worked by the step of a worker or even by an unloaded truck or even a loaded truck unless the load be the normal unit.
As the trucks are run out they are passed over the base of the tally thus depressing the plate 6 and drawing down on the rod 12 and raising the weighted arm 1.
As the arm at rises the link 20 raises the end of the lever 17 to which it is attached. This pulls down on the link 18 and actuates the arm 16 which advances the indicator of the tally, the change being announced by the bell 21.
The turn-buckle 13 permits the adjust ment of the plate 6 so as to assure a proper operating movement of the register arm and at the same time to provide for an adjustment of the plate at the proper angle so that the wheel of the truck in passing over it will be sure to ride easily. In the case of large wheel trucks a steeper angle can be used than with small wheel trucks.
Various modifications in the form, structure and operation of the device may obviously be made within limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lVhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A movable loading truck tally adapted to be set in the path of loading trucks, comprising a flat heavy base plate, an upright thereon, a counter balance arm pivoted to said upright, a Weight on said arm, a regisplate and said arm, substantially as and for tering device operatively connected to said the purpose specified. 10 arm to register each complete movement In testimony whereof, I have afiiXed my thereof, means for audibly signaling upon signature in presence of two Witnesses.
each registering movement of said arm, a GEORGE T. WADE. depression plate pivoted to said base plate lVitnesses:
at one side thereof and an adjustable connec- EUGENE M. BREWSTER,
