To all whom 'it may concern:
, a subject ot' the King of Prussia, and resident of 185 Oranenstrasse, Berlin, Kingdoin of Prussia, German Empire, have 1nvented certain new 'and useful Improve` ments in Atomix/Leis, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to portable atom..
izers or spray-producers of the type in which,
a piston is vmoved within a cylinder under the .action of a spring, to eject the fluid to be atomized through a nozzle and in which.. y the piston is drawn-back against the action 4ol. the spring so as to enable ,the cylinder to be filled with liquid ready for the'next operation, and the object of the present invention is to improve and simplify the construction and manipulation of such atomizi ing apparatus.
, According to 4the present invention a screwed spindlepassingthrough the closed e'ec't the li uid through the nozzle.
end of the cylinder is threaded through a nut secured against rotation but slidable in a preferably angular' casing projecting from the piston so that on rotating said spindle in one direction, the nut is threadedh thereon -and draws baclg the piston against the action ot the spring. The cylinder may then be filled and for this pur ose it is preferably provided with a funne -shaped cpl;I at.- its open end into Awhich the nozzle-chsinglmay be screwed, and the bore of the noizle is preferably provided with a screwldown valve so. that by closing theboremtifl` the .nozzle and `rotating the screwed .spindle in Iatomizing apparatus, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line .Af-B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one art of tbe nozzle hereinafter more fully re erred to.
.The ratomizer consists essentially of a preferably cylindrical casing 1 closed at one Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Allg, 13, 1912. Application led February 16, 1912. Serial No. 678,145.
, i end by means of a block 3 secured thereto Be it known that I, HERMANN STRUMPF,
by means of screws 2. The other end of the cylinder is provided 'with e neck portion 4 wardly into contact with the cylinderwall by means of a springr ring 12.
Integral with and projecting from the,
rear plate 7 is a preferably triangular prismatic casing 14 having an opening 15 at one end through which passes, a screwed spindle 16 which is provided 'at its lower end with a fiange/ 17 rotatable in a corresponding groove in the, block 3 and provided with ajrectangular recess 1S for the reception ,of-a screw key or other manipulating device,` 9. Threaded on the spindle 16 is a nut 20j, which is capable of a sliding movementA within the casing 14: butwhich is prevented from rotation therein owing to the triangular cross-section ofthe casing 14, which construct-ion enables the employment of an ordinary hexagonal nut 20, as may be seen in Fig. 3. Fast on the end of the screw spindle 16 is secured an abutment 2l which may be riveted or otherwise secured thereto. A spring 22 contained within the cylinder 1 and bearing at one end against the block rear plate f the piston 6 tends to force the piston 6 tbward the neck-shaped end 4.' i It is preferable to employ a guide casing lll oftriangular cross section as shown in the drawing owingr to the'economy thereby .attained in constructional material.
the casing 14 is constructed preferably sov that. its apical edges almost Contact with' the surrounding spring 22, as may be seen in Fig. 2, so that by this means any displacement of the piston 6 in the cylinder l is prevented.
37a2d at its other end against the..
Thel "casing 14 may however be of any other de- The reduced neck portion l of the atomcasing 24 which is for this purpose provided With a mille'l hand wheel 25. The casing 24; isprovided with a narrow central bore 26 adapted to be closed by means of a preferably cone valve 27 which can beraised and lowered by means of a milled hand Wheel 28` secured on the spindle 29 of the valve, which is provided with a narrow central bore 30 terminating at its lower end in lateral orifices 31 opening into a valve chamber in the valve easing 24. 32 designates packing around the valve spindle 29 held in position by means of a screwed cap 33. The upper end of the valve spindle 29 is provided With a iiange 3ft and is externally" threaded to receive an internally threaded nozzle 35 having a narrow outlet orifice 36. Screwed into the nozzle 35 is a cylindrical externally threaded element 37 (shown in detail in Fig. 3) which is provided at its lower end with a reduced extension 38' to enable it'to be screwed into the nozzle and exteriorly provided with a spiral groeve 39 Which connects the bore 30 of the valve spindle 29 with a shallow chamber 40 in the rear of the discharge orifice 36.
The operation of the improved atomizing apparatus is as follows :lnorder to fill the atomizer with liquid, the valve casingr l 24 together with the valve 27 and nozzle 35 is screwed out of the neck piece23. Thereupon the screwed spindle -16 is rotated in one direction by means of a crank or the like 19 and the mit 20 thereby threaded over the screwed, spindle 16, thus drawing back the casing 14 together with the piston 16 in the cylinder 1, thereby compressing the spring 22.
In the example illustrated on the drawing the piston 6 is capable of being moved over approximately one halt of the length 'of the cylinder 1. When the piston 6 has been drawn back in the manner hereinbefore described, the upper part of the cylinder -1 may be filled with liquid through the funnel 5 and ile valve casing 21 again screwed into the neck piece 23. The valve 27 is then screwed down by means oi the hand wheel 28 so as to close the port 26. The screwed spindlesl is then rotated in the opposite direction by turning the crank 19 and by this means the nut v20 is threaded in the reverse direction on the screwed spindle 16 until it abuts against the abut-inent plate 2l. The valve 27 niay thereupon be raised from its` seating, thus freeing the piston 6 which Yundert'theaction of the spring 22 forces the liquid outof thecylinder 1 through the port 26,oriices 31 and port 30 and thence through the spiral groove 39 and out at the discharge nozzle 36 in the form oiE a tine spray.
