To all w it may c ncern:
Be it known that I, \VILL AM JOHN Ross, a ci izen of Gre Britain, re g a Siler n, in the county of an Juan and St te of Colorado, have invented certain new nd useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to. the accompanying drawing.
This, invention relates to beds and has special reference to, an invalids bed pro: vided with a commode.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved structure of the char: acter described, in which provision is made for the ready and convenient usage and removal of the commode, thus doing away with the inconvenience of using a bed-pan.
\Yith the above and other objects, in view, as will be hereinafter explained, the invention consists in general of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like char acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the bed constructed in accordance to this invention, a certain portion of the. mattress being broken away, the better to disclose the operating parts. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed end-view of the mattress and springs, the same being partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detailed section showing the plug which is used to fill the space in the mattress left by the removal of the commode. Fig. 6 is a detailed View showing the manner of securing the mattress to the spring frame at the movable section. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the commode. Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-section thereof. Fig. 9 is a cross-section of the plug used to fill the mouth of the commode after use.
The bed proper is provided with the usual legs 10, side-rails 11 and cross-bars or slats. 12. Supported on the cross-bars or slats and on the slde-rails 11 are spring sections 13 and 14, forming respectively the head and foot sections of the springs. These sections are preferably incased in heavy fabric or the like, so that the mattress when placed thereon may be yieldingly supported by the rod 17 and an operating screw 18.
springs, On top of these spring sections are placed the head and foot sections of the mattress as indicated respectively at 15 and 16.. It is to be noted that the head and foot sections of the springs and mattress are spaced apart at adjacent ends, as can clearly be seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 3. Just beneath the space left between these sections there is provided a supporting member or These members. are held in bearings 19, formed on the side-rails 11 and one end of the screw 18 projects. through the side-rail and is provided with a crank-handle 20 for the purpose of rotating the screw.
Between the head and foot sections "there is provided, a movable spring section 21,
,which is supported on the rods 17 and 18 by means of depending cars 22 and 23, the ears 22 being carried on the screw 18 and threaded for engagement therewith, so that when the screw is rotated the ears will be moved longitudinally thereof and carry with them the spring section 21. For the purpose of permitting the passage of this section, the side-rail 11 is cut away as at 24. Upon the spring section 21 there is a removable mattress section 25 and for the purpose of insuring that this mattress section shall move with the spring section 21 the mattress section is connected to the spring section by flinlrs 26, which are diagonally disposed, so
that the presence of the links will not-interfere with the operation of the springs.
Adjacent one side of the bed, preferably the side where is provided the handle 20, the spring section 21 is provided with an opening 27 surrounded by small coiled springs 28. In vertical alinement with the opening 27 there is provided an opening 29, which is somewhat larger than the opening 27, so that a shoulder is formed as can clearly be seen in Fig. 4 between the two openings just referred to. The opening 27 is provided with a peripheral reinforcement 30. This opening 29 is normally closed by means of the plug or stopper 31, which is of the same material and height as the mattress, so that the bed under normal conditions is without break throughout its extent.
The commode comprises a cylindrical lower portion 32 of the size to fill the opening 27 and ovate upper portion 33, which is provided with the peripheral rim 34, for engagement on the top of the mattress around the opening 29 when placed therein. For
and upper portions of said commode.
I11 using this bed it will, of course, be necessary to have the under sheet arranged in sections, so that one portion thereof can move without removing the remaining portion. When it is desired to use the commode the filling 31 is removed and the commode placed in posit-ion. The crank-handle 20 is then rotated in the proper direction until the movable section of the mattress is moved sidewise to such position that the commode is in position beneath the patient. After use the movement of the crank handle is reversed and the commode drawn to the side of the bed where it may be removed and the plug 31 replaced. It will be observed that there has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the characted specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material appearance thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is shown to include all such as'properly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim is 1. In a bed, side-rails, a bar extending between said side-rails, a parallel screw extending between said side-rails, a movable spring and mattress section supported on said screw and bar, a lug depending from said movable section and engaging said screw, and means to rotate the screw.
'2. In a bed, a spring section having an opening therein, a mattress section superposed on said spring section and provided with an opening in alinement with the opening in the spring section, the mattress open ing being larger than the spring opening, and a removable commode fitting said opening, a bar support-ing said spring section adjacent one end thereof, a screw supporting said spring section adjacent the other end thereof, lugs under said mattress and said spring sections engaging said screw, and means to rotate the screw and move the spring and mattress sections laterally.
3. In a bed, a movable spring section, a mattress section superposed on said spring section, and diagonally arranged links having their ends pivoted respectively to the aforesaid spring and mattress sections.
4. In a bed, a movable spring sect-ion, a
mattress section superposed on said spring section and diagonally arranged links having their ends pivoted respectively to the aforesaid spring and mattress sections and means to move said sections laterally.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LOUIS T. SLEADE, FRANK L. Ross.
