AUTOMATIC SPRAYING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON J. TYLER, cit-izen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Spraying Apparatus, of which the following is a I specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for spraying insecticides, disinfectants and other liquid solutions, in which the spraying of the liquid solution is effected by compressed air or other fluid under pressure.
One object of the invention is to provide a spraying apparatus in which the parts will be so constructed and arranged that the pressure fluid will be admitted to the container and the liquid solution discharged therefrom through the same pipe.
A further object is to arrange the pump valve in the path of the liquid from the container so that when the liquid is discharged, the latter will form in efi ect a water seal for said valve.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spraying apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of the rear bearing plate or bracket, a plan view showing the bolts removed, being shown immediately above the saw c; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the front plate or bracket; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view, showing the manner of supporting the adjacent strap suspension clip in position on the rear plate or bracket; Fig. 7 is a similar View, showing the manner of attaching the other strap suspension clip to the front plate or bracket; ig. 8 shows a top plan view and silde elevation of each of the hose supporting 0 ips.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved spraying apparatus forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a liquid container or tank 5, preferably cylindrical in shape, as shown, and formed of metal or other suitable material, said tankbeing provided with oppositely disposed heads 6 having their central portions concaved at 7 and their marginal edges retained in position on the tank, by
bending the side walls thereof inwardly, as indicated at 8.
Arranged within the container 5, is a substantially L-shaped discharge pipe 9, the horizontal arm of which is disposed in contact with or slightly above the bottom of the container and is provided with a series of perforations 10, through which air is l in the bend of the pipe to allow a portion of c the air to pass upwardly between the pipe and the mating head.
Arranged above the tank or container 5 and preferably disposed parallel therewith, is a pump cylinder 13, in which is mounted for reciprocation a rod 14, one end of which passes through a suitable gland 15 and terminates in an operating handle 16, while the other end of the rod is provided with a piston. The piston comprises an outer ring 17 and an inner ring 18 connected by spaced radiating ribs 19, the inner face of the outer ring 17 being provided with a curved seat 20 for the reception of a leather packing indicated at 21. The leather packing 21 is ar-,
ranged with the hair side thereof next to the inner wall of the cylinder 13, and is retained in position on the outer ring 17 by a disk 22, the latter constituting a seat for a flexible valve 23.
The cylinder 13 is provided with oppositely disposed heads or closures 24 and 25 having reduced threaded extensions 26, to which-are connected by suitable union nuts 27, angularly disposed nipples 28. The nipples 28 extend in opposite directions for attachment to flexible pipes 29 and 30, one of said pipes being provided with a spraying nozzle 31 and the other with a strainer 32 adapted to be inserted in a supply tank or other receptacle, when it is desired-to transfer the liquid solution from said supply tank to-the container 5. The head 24 is provided-with an inwardly extending flange 33 for engagement with a valve seat 34, there being a packing strip or washer 35 interposed between the valve seat and a sleeve on the adjacent end of the cylinder 13 for the purpose of preventing leakage between the parts. The'valve seat 34 is similar in construction to the valve seat 22 and mounted on said seat 34, is a flexible valve 36 by means of which the liquid in the container is prevented from being sucked upwardly and laterally into the cylinder 13 when the handle 16 is retracted.
The inner end of the rod 14 is preferably threaded for engagement with a clamping nut 37, which latter bears against the'valve seat 22 and serves to hold said valve seat and outer ring 17 in position on the piston rod.
Mounted on the upper portion of the container 5, near the rear end thereof, is a supporting bracket'38 having its lower face concaved at 39 toconformto the shape of the cylinder and its upper face pierced by spaced openings 40 for the reception of bolts or similar fastening devices 41, said bracket serving to receive and support a depending foot or standard-"42, preferably formed integral with the adjacent head 25 of the pump, as shown. The foot or standard 42 terminates in a base plate 43 adaptedto bear against the upper face of the bracket 38, there being openings 44 formed in the base plate 43 to permit the passage of the bolts 41 so that by rotating the clamping nuts 45, the base plate 43 will be securely clamped in position on the adj acent supporting bracket.

As a means for suspending the container from the shoulders of the operator, there are provided suitable clips 50 having loops 51 pivotally mounted thereon for attachmentto a suitable suspension strap, (not shown). The clips 50 are provided. with perforations to permit the passage of the adjacent bolts 41 so that when the nuts 45 are adjusted on said bolts, the lower faces of the nuts will bear against the clips and thus securely hold isaid clips in position on the adjacent sup- Eportingbrackets. The inner end of one of f the clips 50-is provided with a slot 52 adapted to receive a rib 53 formed on the foot or standard 42, while the inner end of the other clip 50 is concaved at 54 'for engagement with the exterior wall of the nipple 49, thus to assist in firmly anchoring said-clips on the supporting brackets.
The hose sections 29 and 30 are preferably retained in assembled position by suitable clips 55, each having its lower portion split at 56 so as to permit the clip to be clamped around the adjacent flexible hose section and ;its other end terminating in clamping fingers 57 adapted to embrace the mating hose section.
The spraying nozzle31 may be of any suitable construction and is provided with the usual shut off collar 58, although a turn- ,ing-plug or valve may be used instead for controlling the flow of liquid solution to the tip of the nozzle, if desired.

As the liquid solution is introduced into'the container 5, the air within the tank will be further compressed until the pressure thereof approximates fifty pounds to the square inch, which pressure, in actual practice, has been found sufficient to thoroughly spray the liquid solution. When pumping air into the tank,
the strainer 32 will, of course, be supported in elevated position by the adjacent clip 55. On the rearward stroke of the pump piston, the valve 36'will be moved to-closed position and a partial vacuum formed between said valve and piston head with the result that as. the:piston continues to travel in a rearward direction, the air at the rear of said piston will open thevalve 23 and passto the front thereof. On the forward stroke of the pump piston, the valve 86 will be moved to open position, so that the air in the cylinder 13 will be forced through the pipe 9 and perforations 10 into the tank, as before stated. It is obvious that the valves 36 and 23 will operate in a similar manner when transferring the liquid solution from the supply tank to the container 5.
It will here be noted that the valve 36 is disposed in the path of the liquid discharged through the pipe 9, so that said liquid coming in contact with the valve 36, will form in effect a water seal for the latter. It will also be noted that the construction of the pump is such that said pump may be used for introducing either air or liquid into the container 5, thus dispensing with a separate pump for this purpose.
By arranging the perforated pipe near the bottom of the liquid container 5, practieally all of the liquid solution in the tank may be discharged from the container without permitting the escape of an appreciable amount of air or without the necessity of recharging the container with air during the spraying operation. The mrforations 10 are also so disposed as to cause a uniform diffusion of air throughout the contents of the container and thus prevent the settling of the heavy particles of solution on the bottom of said container. lVhile the pump cylinder and its associated parts are preterably arranged on the exterior of the tank, it will of course be understood that said pump cylinder may be arranged within the container or tank without departing from the spirit of the invention. It will also be understood that the pump may be used for various other purposes, and for this reason, although described with great particularity, is not claimed specifically in the present application, it being my intention to file a separate application embodying the specific construction of the pump mechanism.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a liquid container, of a pipe extendinginto the container and provided exteriorly with a terminal spraying nozzle. external supporting brack ets secured rigidly to the container, a pump operatively connected with the pipe at an intermediate point of the length thereof for forcing either air or water into the container, and means for clamping the pump rigidly to the suporting brackets.
2. The combination with a liquid container, of a pipe extending into the container and having its lower portion bent laterally and arranged near the bottom of the container, said laterally bent portion being provided with perforations, a pump secured to the exterior of the container and operatively connected with the pipe between the ends thereof for forcing either air or liquid through the pipe to the interior of the container, and a spraying nozzle carried by the outer end of the pipe.
3. The combination with a liquid container, of a pipe extending into the container and having the end portion thereof perforated, supporting brackets secured rigidly on the exterior of the container, a pump cylinder supported on said brackets and communicating at one end with the pipe, a spraying nozzle communicating with said end of the cylinder, a hose section communicating with the opposite end of the cylinder, a piston operating within the cylinder for forcing either air or liquid into the container, and means for clamping the pump cylinder rigidly to the brackets.

The combination with a liquid container, of a substantially L-shaped pipe disposed within the container and having one arm thereof perforated and disposed parallel with and near the bottom of said container, a pump cylinder secured directly to the exterior of the container and communicating at one end with said pipe, a nipple communicating with the opposite end of the cylinder, a second nipple con'imunicating with the pipe near the first-named end of said cylinder, pipe sections respectively connected with said nipples, one of which is provided with a strainer and the other with a spraying nozzle, and a piston operating within the cylinder for forcing either air or liquid into the container.
5. The combination with a liquid container, of front and rear supporting bracketa resting on the exterior of the container, a pipe extending through one of the supporting brackets and provided with a perforated portion arranged near the bottom.

6. The combination with a liquid container, of front and rear supporting bracke s resting on and conforming to the exterio surface of the container, a pump cylinder supported on the brackets, retaining plates resting on said brackets, fastening devices extending through the brackets and retaining plates, :1 piston operating within the pump cylinder for forcing either air or liquid into said container, a liquid intake pipe section communicating with one end of the pump cylinder, a pipe section communicating with the container near the other end of the pump cylinder and provided wit-h a spraying nozzle, and clips supported on the retaining plates and provided with loops for attachment to a suspension strap, some of the fastening devices of the retaining plates serving to hold the clips in position thereon.
7. The combination with a liquid container, of a perforated pipe disposed within the container, a spraying nozzle operatively connected with the perforated pipe, spaced brackets curved to conform to and supported on the exterior of the container, said brackets being provided with perforations, retaining plates bearing against the upper faces of the supporting brackets and provided with similar perforations, clips resting on said retaining plates, loops pivotally mounted on the clips, fastening devices ex tending through the perforations in the brackets and retaining plates and also piercing the adjacent clips, and a pump carried by the retaining plates and operatively connected with the perforated pipe for forcing either air or liquid into the container.
8. The combination with a liquid container, of a perforated pipe disposed within the container, supporting brackets resting on the exterior of the container, a pump cyl inder supported on said brackets and opera tively connected with the perforated pipe, a liquid conductor connected with one end of the pump cylinder and provided with a terminal strainer, a second liquid conductor connected with the perforated pipe near the other end of the cylinder and provided with a spraying nozzle, clips mounted on said conductors and having split portions, clamping devices inserted through said split portions, clamping fingers extending from the clips opposite the split portions thereof to engage the adjacent conductor, a pump op erating within the cylinder for forcing either air or liquid through the perforated pipe into the container, and means for clamping the pump cylinder in engagement with the brackets.
9. The combination with a liquid container, of a pipe extending within the con tainer and provided with an angular perforated arm arranged near the bottom of said container and spaced from the adjacent end thereof, supporting brackets resting on the container, a pump cylinder supported on said brackets and operatively con nected with the upper end of the pipe, a nipple extending inwardly from one end of the cylinder, a second nipple communicating across the cylinder with the perforated pipe near the other end of said cylinder. flexible hose sections respectively connected with said nipples and extending in opposite directions, one of said hose sections being provided with a strainer and the other with a spraying nozzle, and a pump operating within the cylinder for forcing either air or liquid through the perforated pipe and upwardly through the body of the liquid in the container for agitating said liquid.
10. The combination with a cylindrical liquid container, of front and rear brackets conforming to and bearing against the eX- terior wall of the container, one of said brackets being provided with a depression, a pipe arranged within said container and provided with an angular perforated arm disposed near the bottom of the container, a pump cylinder including spaced heads, one of which is provided with a nipple seated within the depression of the adjacent bracket and the other provided with a depending foot resting on the upper surface of the other bracket, a nipple communicating with one of the heads of the cylinder, a
1 second nipple communicating with the other head of the cylinder, flexible conductors connected with said nipples, one of which is provided with a strainer and the other with a terminal spraying nozzle, a piston operating within said cylinder for forcing either air or liquid into the container, retaining plates bearing against the brackets, and fastening devices piercing the retaining plates and brackets for securing the pump in position on said container.
11. The combination with a cylindrical liquid container having concavo-convex end walls, of front and rear brackets conforming to and resting on the exterior wall of the container, a perforated pipe arranged within said container, a pump cylinder having, oppositely disposed heads, one of which is provided with a solid foot resting on the rear bracket and the other with a depending nipple seated in a depression in the front bracket, nipples communicating with the heads of the cylinder and extending in opposite directions, a piston operating within the pump cylinder, a valve disposed in front of the piston, flexible conductors connected with the nipples, one of which is provided with a strainer, and the other with a spraying nozzle, and clips embracing said conductors for holding the latter in assembled position.
12. The combination with a liquid container, of front and rear brackets conforming to and bearing against the exterior wall of the container, one of said brackets being provided with a depression, a perforated pipe extending within the container, a pump cylinder having oppositely disposed heads, one of which is provided with a foot resting on the rear bracket and having oppositely disposed ribs, a nipple depending from the other head and fitting within a de-- pression in the front bracket, nipples communicating respectively with the rear end of the cylinder and said perforated pipe, flexible conductors connected with the nipples and provided with a strainer and spraying nozzle, respectively a piston operating within the cylinder, retaining plates engaging the brackets, suspension clips bearing against the upper faces of the retaining plates and provided with terminal loops for attachment to a strap, the inner end of one of the suspension clips being provided with a slot for engagement with the adjacent rib and the inner end of the other clip being curved to conform to and adapted to bear against the exterior wall of the nipple of the cylinder head, and a fastening device passing through the brackets, retaining plates and suspension clips for holding the parts rigidly in assembled position.
13. The combination with a liquid container, of a perforated pipe arranged Within the container, a flexible conductor connected with one end of the pipe and provided with a spraying nozzle, a pump secured to the exterior of the container and having a common communication with said pipe and said conductor, a valve in said conductor for preventing the escape of liquid through the pump cylinder, and a flexible conductor having one end thereof connected with the end of the pump remote from the perforated pipe and the first-mentioned flexible conductor and its other end arranged for insertion in a liquid supply tank, said pump also serving to force the liquid from the supply tank through the perforated pipe into the container, after air under pressure has been introduced within said container.
