l This invention relates to a pump, the suction and ,discharge-pipe of which forni the two legsof a siphon, while thefplungeikrod of the pump is provided with a plug, fitting air-tight into the barrehand the discharge pipe is `furnished with a stop-valve lat or ucar its 1noutl |v l ilrsuch a manuel-"that, when .this valve is closed, a

few strokes 'of Vthe `pluhger. are sutticient to fill both legs ot' lche siphon,`and by` depressing the` plug into the pum p-barrel and opening the valve of the dischargepipe the Siphon is started, and any desired liquid can be transferred from one vessel into another with case and eonvenence.` l y The shortlegof the Siphon is made lexible,iand

To this` pump is connected a suction-pipe, C, which forms the short leg ofI asiphon, and a discharge-pipe, D, whichforms thelong leg of said si'phon, aud to the `mouth of this discharge-pipe is secured a'stop- ,cock or valve, c, so that the same can be l opened or closedat pleasure.` p.

From" the plunger B extends a rod, al, to the upper `cud of which is secured aplug, e, which fits air-tight into 4.the mouthof the barrel A, when the plunger is depressed to the positionfshown in the drawing. i

The discharge-pipe 'may be attached to a tube, f,

extending from the upper part of the-barrel, as shown,

or it may be connected to the barrel at any convenient .valve c of the dscharge-pipe and set the plunger of thc pump in motion. After a 'ew strokes with this plunger the siphon is charged. I then depress the plunger, so as to close the ftop e'ud f the barrel A by the plug'e, and prevent the air-from passing into the siphon, and then Iopeu the stop-valve c, and the liquid continues to flow through the siphou 4as' long as the mouth of the discharge-pipe is situated below the level ot' the liquid in the vessel, from which said liquid is drawn.

It' the liquid is ot' such a nature that it is liable to form a sediment,-I make the suction-pipe G'ilexible, and connect it to a cord or rope, g, so that by pulling said cord its mouth'can b c raised to any desired level,y

as indicated in the drawing, and thereby the sediment is prevented from passing into the pump, and it isnot drawing out the sediment.

If desired, the discharge-pipe may be thrown over p necessary to hold the whole pump up in order to avoid la hook or bracket, lz., attached to the side ot' `the bar rel A, and in this case the pump can be uscdas'a common hand-pump.
