FLUID-ACTUATED CLUTCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. it), 1912.
Application filed March 23, 1910. Serial No. 551,092.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. HAAKON- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jelly, in the county of Tehama and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fluid Actuated Clutches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fluid actuated clutches and more particularly to such devices adapted to be used in conjunction with pumps operated by gasolene engines.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the device, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tional view, Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the device in disengaged position, the tank and pump being omitted, Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of modification of regulator.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown the shaft of a gasolene engine of any type, the details of which it is not deemed essen tial to illustrate, but which is provided with a suitable governor whereby when relieved from load the supply of gas to the engine will be automatically reduced, so as to maintain its feed at a minimum rate.
Engaged revolubly on the shaft there is shown the pinion 11, held against longitudinal movement by two suitable collars 12 on opposite sides thereof, the pinion 11 carrying the concentrically projected annular V-fiange 13, the apex of which is presented outwardly, and splined upon the end of the shaft within the V-flange, there is a sliding spider 14 having the pivoted radial arms 15 engaged by suitable resilient means tending to hold them in disengaged position as shown in Fig. 4, and provided with the shoes 17 at their extremities of suitable configurations to fit snugly into the V-flange 13, as will be apparent. Projected longitudinally from the spider 14, there is a suit able housing 18, which may comprise a plurality of arms, or a conical wall, carrying at its outer end a head 19, between which and the adjacent end of the shaft 10, there is engaged a protractile spring 20 of suitable form. The gear 11 is connected to a larger gear 11 from which runs a suitable pitman 21 to a pump 22 of any suitable construction, adapted to supply material through the pipe 2 1- to the tank 25. Suitable connections 26 are made with the tank for drawing off the material under pressure therein, and connected with the tank in a suitable manner there is a pressure actuated regulator 27. The governor comprises a tube 28 extended concentrically of the line of the axis of the shaft 10, and spaced a short distance outwardly of the head 19 of the housing, the tube having its end adjacent the housing provided with an inwardly projecting flange 29. Carried slidably in the tube there is a suitable piston member 30, between which and the flange 29 there is engaged under compression a suitable spring 31. The outer end of the tube 28 is interiorly threaded and engaged over a suitable pipe 32 connected suitably to the tank 25, the end thereof engaged with this serving as a stop seat for the piston when at the inner limit of its movement under action of the spring 31. The piston 30 carries an axial outwardly project-ing stem 33, projected outwardly of the sleeve, and impinging centrally against the head 19. The end of the stem 33 is pointed, and centered on the head so that during revolution of the shaft 10 and spider which carry with them the housing 18 and head 19, there will be no lateral displacement of the V -flange tending to injure the governor. If desired, the sleeve may be made in two sections, as in Fig. 5 the outer threaded upon the inner section and carrying the flange thereon, so that the tension of the spring upon the piston may be regulated by screwing the outer section inwardly or outwardly upon the inner section, varying the pressure of the spring against the piston to adapt it to yield to any desired pressure in the tank.
What is claimed is:
In a fluid actuated clutch, comprising an annular V-shaped rim having a hub formed at one side thereof for loosely engaging a driving shaft, a collar slidably mounted upon the end ofthe shaft, mounted upon said collar and radiating therefrom, said arms carrying shoes for engaging said rim, a head formed at one side of said collar, means for forcing said head outwardly from the end of said shaft, a
arms pivotally fluid pressure cylinder in concentric aline- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, ment with said head for actuating said in presence of tWo Witnesses. clutch, and a piston Within said cylinder and THEODORE A. HAAKONSON. having a stern projecting outwardly there- W itnesses:
5 through said stem being pointed at the end 0. SIMENSON, for engaging the center of said head. N. GERNON.
