To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BUTCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in inhalers.

The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved inhaler which may be used with little inconvenience, and one which is effective in the delivery of the medicament, and one which is sanitary.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Figure I is a perspective view of my improved inhaler, it being shown applied to a figure. Fig. II is a detail perspective view, portions of the body being broken away. Fig. III is a top view with the detaching straps removed. Fig. IV is a detail cross section on a line corresponding to line 4;-t of Fig. III, showing the arrangement of the openings 3 and the medicament absorbing material within the body of the inhaler. Fig. V is a detail cross section taken on a line corresponding to line of Fig. II.

In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.

Referring to the drawing, my improved inhaler consists of an oblong annular body 1, adapted to be placed over the mouth and curved rearwardly to fit the face of the user. The upper edge of the body is curved downwardly at 2, and in this downwardly curved portion are holes 3, placed so as to be below the nostrils of the wearer.

The lower part of the body is provided with upwardly facing openings 4, the openings 4 being centrally located so that they defined and are below the mouth of the user. The body 1 is hollow and an absorbent or medicament absorbing material 5 is arranged in the body below the openings 3 and 4. The medicament is dropped through the openlngs into this material The body of the inhaler is arranged over the mouth with the mouth opening positioned as is shown in Fig. I, so that the openings 3 are below the nostrils. When thus arranged, the air is drawn into the nostrils over the openings 3 so that the medicament escaping therefrom passes into the nostrils. If the user breathes through the mouth, the medicament is drawn into the mouth. The exhaled air does not pass through the medicated absorbent, as is common with inhalers of the mask type.

My improved inhaler is sanitary and can be easily cleaned. It is preferably made of hard rubber or like material. A further advantage of my improved inhaler is that the user does not have a smothered sensation, such as results from placing a mask over the nostrils or the month.

My improved inhaler is provided with attaching straps 6, secured to loops 7 in the ends of the inhaler, the straps being adapted to be secured to the ring 11 at the back of the head, and an attaching strap 8 having ends 9 adapted to straddle the nose and attached to the loops 10 on the upper edge of the body. the head and secured in the ring 11.

My improved inhaler delivers the medicament effectively, and. at the same time, is convenient to use and agreeable to the user for the reasons pointed out.

I have illustrated and described my improved inhaler in detail in a simple embodiment. I am aware that considerable structural variations are possible, but as such variations will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same herein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An inhaler comprising an oblong annular rearwardly curved hollow body, adapted to be placed over the mouth, the upper edge of the body being downwardly curved at the center, there being upwardly facing openings in the downwardly curved The strap 8 is passed over.

2. An inhaler comprising an annular chambered body adapted to be placed over the mouth and having upwardly facing openings in the parts above and below the mouth, said body being adapted to receive medicament absorbing material.

3. An inhaler comprising a body having l a central mouth opening with medicament chambers below and above the mouth opening said medicament chambers having upwardly facing openings.
