UNITED stratus PATENT OFFIQE- ED M. SYP, OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
BED-COVER RETAINER.
Application filed October 1, 1910, Serial No. 584,930. Renewed December 5, 1912.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ED M. SYP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Bed- Cover Retainer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a. device for retaining bed covers in place on the bed, being particularly adapted for use on childrens beds to prevent the kicking off of the clothes at night during the sleeping hours, and one of the main objects of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which will yieldingly hold the bed clothes in place while the bed is occupied so thatthe person in the bed may have free movement therein, without resulting in dislodgment of the bed covers.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which may be readily placed in engagement with or disengaged from the bed clothes.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which may be attached directly to the ordi nary bed clothes in common use withoutaltering the clothes or placing any permanent fastening means on the clothes.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which is of simple form and which may be economically produced.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter in the specification.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bed equipped with a form of my invention, a portion of the bed clothes or covers being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the device showing the manner of securing the same to the frame. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line {E3--Q33 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the end of one of the cords and the clothes clip thereon showing the covers gripped therein.
The device consists of a pair of retainers substantially identical in form placed one on each side of the bed. Each retainer consists of two cables or cords 1 and 2 providing flexible connections, the inner end of each cord 1 and 2 being secured to the end of a tension spring 8 in any suitable manner, in the form shown the inner end of each cord is secured to the spring by pass- Specificaticn of Letters Patent.

ing the end of the cord through an eye 4; formed at the ends of the spring 3, and tying the cord thereto. The cord 1 passes through a pulley 5 swiveled in a screw eye 6 secured in a stationary part of the bed 7. In the present instance the screw eye 6 is secured in a portion of the spring frame 8, adjacent the head 9 of the bed. The cord 2 passes through a similar pulley 10, swiveled in a screw eye 11 secured in the spring frame 8 adjacent to the foot 12 of the bed. The pulleys provide guides through which the flexible connections freely pass.
To the outer end of each cord 1 and 2 is secured a snap hook 13 adapted to receive the eye 14 of'a clothing clip 15, provided with an opening 16 to receive a portion 17 of the upper bed clothes or covers 18. The opening 16 in the clip 15 is contracted at the outer end thereof as shown'at 19 to securely bind the clothing therein, a portion 17 of the clothing 18 having been passed through the large portion of the opening 16 and then pulled into the contracted portion 19.
While the device as above described is the preferred form, it is readily understood that the snap hook 13 may be omitted and the clothing clip 15 secured directly to the end of the cord, and it is further understood that the pulleys 5 and 10 may be omitted and the cords 1 and 2 be passed through the screw eyes 6 and 11 without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The device is used in the following manner: Each clothes clip 15 on the cords 1 is secured to a portion of the bed covers 18 at each side of the bed near the head as shown in Fig. 3, the clips 15 in this case being placed under the bed covers 18 and a portion of the covers secured in the clips as shown. The clips 15 on the cords 2 are similarly secured to the bed covers adjacent to the foot of the bed. It will readily be seen that the above described device so attached to the bed covers will yieldingly hold the covers in place over the occupant of the bed, and yet permit free movement of the occupant, due to the yielding of the spring 3 connecting the inner ends of the cords 1 and 2, and the free movement of the cords 1 and 2 through the pulleys 5 and 10. When it is desired to remove the device, the snap hooks 13 may be disengaged from the clothes clip and the latter left on the covers ready for engagement With the snap hook when it is desired to use the device; or, the device may be disengaged from the covers by disengaging the clothes clip from the covers Without removing the snap hook, in this case the clothes clip remains on the snap hook ready for further use. It is further understood that While I have described the clothes clip engaging under the covers, the device may be used by placing the outer ends of the cords 1 and 2 on the outside of the covers and se curing the clothes clips to the outside of the covers.
WVhat I claim is:
A bed cover retainer comprising a spiral spring, a cord at each end of said spring, each cord having its inner end attached to the opposite end of said spring, a pulley at each end of the bed secured to said bed, said cords being freely movable through the re- 20 spective pulleys, and means at the outer end of each cord for detachably securing the bed covers thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles California this 26th day of September 1910.
