CATCH-BASIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON Gscnwmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the count-y of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catch- Basins, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in catch basins, and refers particularly to the type or character of basin adapted to catch or receive the flow andv debris from the street gutters into said basin.
One object of my invention is the provision of a catch basin which will be sanitary in every particular, which is readily accessible for'the purpose of cleaning or repair,
which is entirely portable and capable of quick installation.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a catch basin all the partsof which are removable and in the event of wear or breakage can be easily replaced,
which presents an entirely smooth surface or area and thus does not allow the lodgment and retention of foul matter which might-breed disease and which presents an attractive exterior and will not mar or disfigure the appearance of the street or sidewalk. 1
Another object of my invention is the provision of a catch basin which will always remain in a clean, healthy andsanit-ary condition, which will have a long life, and will be of such simple and inexpensive construction as to commend it as a thoroughly desirable and practical improvement in this class of invention.
With these ends in view, my invention consists of a catch basin embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein, it being understood that while the improvement shown and described is a thoroughly practical embodiment ofmy invention, that I reserve the right to make any changes whichcome'within the scope of my claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of v acomplete catch basin constructed 'in acresents a vertical longitudinal section, and
of the improvement.
My catch basin can be made of. any material suitable for the urpose, but by reason of cheapness to menu ac'ture as well as thorough efficiency, I prefer to, use cast metal in the product-ion of the catch basin and the invention comprises the upper member or section .A, which at its forward part is pro- Fig. 4 represents a horizontal sectional view Patented Apr. 29, 195113. Application filed May 11, 1912. Seria'l No. 696,650.
yided with the semi-circular extension B,
orming one-half of the sewer pipe connection, is further provided with the veitical surrounding flange C, and also at its rear with the somewhat restricted extension forming the chambered portion D. .The top E of the upper section extends above the gutter and is provided with a shoulder providing a recess'F, ii which fits flush the top of cover G, this construction providing the intake opening H, provided with a suitable gate J, and adjacent said opening is the gutter alining opening K, in said opening upon the ledges L fitting the grate M, through which the water enters; The lower section 0 is provided around its edge with a groove 0 in which fits the flange of the upper section to make a water-tight seal or joint, and the two sections are properly se-' cured together by means of the series of pairs of ears P, which receive bolts or fastenings Q, and the lower section is provided with a catch or basin R which forms the extreme bottom of the structure, and the forward portion of this basin is extended and provided with a semi-circular portion S, which with the similar portion of the upper section completes the connection to the sewer.
Resting upon the lower section and completely covering the bottom or basin portion thereof is the plate T, formed with aseries of openings T, and at its outer end provided with the vertical wall U, which fits snugly at U against the forward portion contiguous with the spout of the upper section, and at its inner end is formed with a vertical wall V, provided with a series of vertical openings or passages V, said open ings or passages being of larger size than the .slits or openings in the bottom portion, the
function of which is to permit the ready passage of larger particles of matter than could pass through the grated bottom, and this member of my catch basin. 1s formed that it hardly seems necessary with a hook portion W at its upper end, which may be used to retain a gate .or like device if necessary, or may serve as a fastening for said wall, as may be found desirable and necessary.
In use, the catch basin fits in a trench or sewer with its discharge spout connected to the usual sewer for carrying off the waste products or refuse, 'andthe material which is drained from the street into the gutter passes into the catch basin through the grated plate and the inlet opening of the upper section, falling upon the gratedbottom, the water passing through the smaller openings of the grated bottom and the larger particles of. refuse passing through the grated vertical wall into the basin of the lower section, and from said basin out through the spout into the .;'sewer, as most clearly indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3, and as will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings.
The advantages accruing from the use of my invention will be so readily apparent to enlarge upon. them, suffice to state, that the catch basin is of the simplest and cheapest possible construction consisting of only three parts or-members, insuring cleanliness and durability and permitting ready installation and repair when found necessary, also presenting an attractive exterior appearance, and from every standpoint, being highly efficient and practical.
The vertical grated wall of the interior section may be an integral part of the grated bottom or it may be a separate section, and for the purpose of flushing the basin portion of my improvement I provide an opening W in said vertical grated wall to receive a hose which will effectivelyflush the basin and remove any refuse which may have gathered therein. I claim 1. A catch basin, comprising an'upper member provided with a semi-circular extension, a restricted extension forming a chambered portion, a shoulder on. said member forming a recess, a cover fittin in said recess, a gate in the intake opening thusformed, said member having a gutter alining opening adjacent said "intake opening, a grate for said gutter opening, a lower member joined to'the upper member by a tongue and groove connection, ears on said members, bolts passing therethrough, a catch basin for the lower member and forming the bottom of the lower member, "said basin having its forward port-ion extended and provided with a semi-circular portion joined to the similarly shaped extension of the upper section to provide the sewer connection, an apertured plate for the lower member, said plate having a vertical wall at its outer end contiguous to the discharge of said members, and an apertured Wall at the inner end of said plate.
2. A catch basin, comprising an upper member provided with a semi-circular extension, a restricted portion forming a chamber portion, a cover, a gate in the intake opening for said chamber portion, said upper member havingwa gutter opening adjacent said intake opening, a lower member joined to the upper member, a catch basin for the lower member and forming the bottom thereof, said basin having its forward portion extended and provided with a semi-circular portion joined to the similarly shaped extension of the-upper-section to provide the sewer connection, an apertured plate for the lower member, said plate having a vertical wall at its outer end contiguous to the discharge of said members, an apertured wall at the inner end of said plate, and a hook portion at the 'upper end of said inner wall, said wall also having. a hole therein for the introduction of a hose to flush the basin.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
