PACKAGE.
l'o all whom z' 1 may concern.'
lle it. known that I, FREDERICK EMMONS, a citizen of the United Statesl of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State ot Ohio, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference. being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
lt is the object of the invention to obtain a construction ot' package particularly adapted for use in the shi nnent of certain classes of goods such for instance as high cxplcsives which require handling with the utmost care. and must be carefully guarded against impact or jar.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the cushioned receptacle as hereinafter setI forth.
.ln the dra\vings,-I `igtne 1 is a perspective view ot the package in partially knocked down iosition; Fig. 2 is a lengltudinal section; 4`ig. 3 is a cross section; and, Fig. 4 is a plan of the blank. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the insert; Fi 6 is .a perspective view of a box of slight y modlfied construction.
The material from which my improved package is constructed is preferably cellular )aper board and preferab y the double-faced lioard. This material on accountof its structure. has a large element of rigidity and also is sufliciently yielding to cushion the article contained tlerein. It. is however, necessary in the protection of high explosives such as dynamite, not only to protect the same from jar but also to use a liquid proof package which will prevent the leakage of any of the contents, and further to avoid all metallic contact. This result I have secured by a package of the following construction:
A is a blank which as shown in Fig. 4 is scored longitudinally and transversely along the lines B, B, B and B to form the sides C, C1, ends D, D and bottom E of a rectangular box. The portions F at the corners intermediate the sides and ends are scored diagonally at G and the arrangement is such that the blank may be folded mto rectangular form by foldn the corners to overlap the sides or ends. Vhere the length of the box is less than twice its height the gores or folded portions are prcferab y arranged. adjacent to the sides and to prevent the gores Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled April 20, 1911.
Patented May 13,191 3. seria1No. 622,257,
from ovcrlappinfr each other, one is cutaway. Thus as s iown at II, the corner ot' the blank is cut-away while the opposite corner is left full and in folded position overlaps the cut-away corner as shown at I in Fig. l. J are tabs or projections on the blank opposite the ends I) and D which are adapted to fold inside the latter to produce a twoply thickness of end wall.
K is an insert or separate blank having a portion L corresponding to the bottom li. and triangular shaped or gered portions M which fit in the recesses beneath the overlap )mg gores at the sides. Thus when as- Sem led the box or package will present a Smooth interior having two of its walls and bottom formed of a plurality of plies ot material.
.To secure greater strength the overlapping gores on opposite sides of the box ex tend over opposite ends thereof, thereinv avoiding alining the joints upon the opposite sides. lVhere the length of the box is greater than twice the height the gores instead of being arranged to overlap the sides arefolded over the ends as shown at N in Fig. 6, while the tabs or projections J are arranged to overlap the sides.
For securing the blank in folded posi tion, I prefertibly employ sta )les O which are inserted into the walls ol the cellular board on the edges thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. This avoids exposure of any metallic sur face and also permits of knocking down the package at any time by withdrawing all the staples.
The receptacle may be closed by any suit able cover such as indicated at l), or two boxes of the same structure may be arranged to telescope with each other.
The package constructed as described will form a safe container for high ex ilosives, as the several plies constituting each of the walls, and the bottom will form a resilient, cushion protecting the contents from impact. Furthermore, the package may be easily knocked down by withdrawing the staples and folding out the blanks which facilitates returnin to the original point of shipment.
What claim as my invention is:
1. A rectangular package formed of a blank having two of the opposite wallsthereof each folded to provide gore portions. leaving a space between the gores, and an insert having a portion covering the botloo toni and provided with ore portions of a size only to fill the space etween said gores of the walls.
Q. A rectangular package formed from a folded blank having two of the opposite walls thereofeacli formed of a plurality of plies of substantially the same size, and the other opposite walls each having folded gore portions forming a space between the ores and an insert havinor a portion covering the bottom and provi( ed with gore portions of a size only to fill the space between the gores of the walls.
3. A rectan ilar package formed of a folded blank iaving two of the opposite walls thereof each foi-med of a plurality of plies of substantially the same size and the other o posite walls having folded gares, one of tie gore's having a portion ciitaway to permit of the gores lying in the saine plane, there being a space formed between the gores, and an insert having a portion completely covering the bottom and gore portions of a size only to fill said space bctween the gores of the walls.
4. A rectangular package formed of a folded blank thaving two of the opposite walls thereof provided with extensions of substantially the saine size as the walls and folded downward within the package and the other opposite Walls having foldet gores. one of the gores having a portion ciit away to periiiit. the gores to lie in the sanie plane7 there being a space formed between the gores, and an insert having a portion conipletely covering the bottom and gore portions of a size only to fill said space between the gores of the walls.
In test-inion whereof I affix iny signature in presence o two witnesses.
