T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. NAUTS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perambulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to perambulators and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the seat and the back for the seat to the frame, in the peculiar adjusting mechanism for the back, in the means for locking the perambulator parts in their, extended positions, and further in the arrangement and combination of various parts as more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of a perambulator embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional, perspective view illustrating'the adjusting mechanism for the back.
The main frame of the Vehicle comprises spaced side bars A connected forwardly of the seat by an integral transverse portion B, and reinforced adjacent their rear ends by a cross-bar C.
D represents the wheel frames pivoted to lugs E depending from the cross-bars, and these lugs are provided with lateral extensions F forming stops for limiting the opening movement of the wheel frames.
G are the arm-rest frames each of which is composed of spaced standards H and I pivotally connected respectively to lugs J and K upon the side bars;
The seat E is supported upon three U- shaped springs F that extend along the margin of the seat sides and center and which are attached to a cross bar G extending transversely of the main frame and secured to the side bars intermediate the ends thereof.
H is the back for the seat which comprises the usual upholstering I and a bail shaped frame J. The lower ends of the frame J terminate in curved portions K and these latter members are pivoted to up standing ears L positioned adjacent and carried by the rear ends of the springs F at the margin of the seat.
The back and seat as thus constructed are free to oscillate independent of the main freedom of oscillation of the seat. Thus, a
pair of gravity dogs M are pivoted at O to the legs of the bailshaped frame J, and each of these dogs is provided with a longitudinal slot P and a plurality of recesses Q opening into said slot.
R are rods or bars arranged upon the opposite sides of the seat and pivotally connected at their forward ends to the front standards and carrying at their rear ends a rod R which is positioned within the slot P. The bars R are provided with e1ongated openings S which have a sliding engagement with headed pins T upon the legs of the bail frame J. This latter connection maintains the rod R in operative relation to the dogs, and also permits the required relative movement between the frame J and the rods R. In order to reinforce the dogs and also to permit the same to be simultaneously released I connect the lower, ends of said members by means of a transverse rod U. To adjust the seat the operator moves the back forward a slight distance and then raises the dogs by means of the transverse rod U so that the rod R engages the longitudinal slot P.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a perambulator, the combination with a main frame including spaced side bars, wheel frames pivotally connected to the side bars, standards pivoted to the frame, arm-rests connecting said standards, a. spring secured to the frame, a seat supported on said spring and independent of the standards and arm-rests, a back for and adjustable in relation to the seat carried by the spring, and means for retaining said back in its different positions of adjustment comprising a dog secured to the back and a member pivoted to the frame with which said dog is adapted to engage.
2. In a perambulator, the combination with a main frame including spaced side bars, wheel frames pivotally connected to said side bars, standards pivoted to the frame, arm-rests connecting said standards, a spring secured to said frame, a seat supported on said spring, a back for and adjustable in relation-to the seat carried by the spring, and means for retaining said back in its different positions of adjustment comprising a pair of dogs pivoted to the back upon opposite sides thereof, a connection between said dogs, a member with which said dogs are adapted to engage, and a pair of pivoted members carrying said first mentioned member.
3. In a perambulator, the combination with a main frame including spaced side bars, wheel frames pivotally connected tov said side bars, standards pivoted to the frame, arm-rests connecting said standards, a spring secured to said frame, a seat supported on said spring, a back for said seat adjustable in relation thereto carried by the spring, and means for retaining said back in its different positions of adjustment comprising a pair of dogs arranged upon opposite sides of the back and pivoted thereto, a rod with which said dogs are adapted to have an interlocking engagement, and a pair of members carrying said rod arranged upon opposite sides of said seat and pivotally connected to the standards.
4. In a perambulator, the combination with a frame, a spring secured to the frame, a seat supported on said spring, a back for and adjustable in relation to the seat carried by the spring, and means for retaining said back in its different positions of adjustment comprising a dog and a member with which said dog is-adapted to engage, said dog being pivoted to theback and said member pivoted to the frame.
5. In a perambulator, the combination with a main frame including spaced side bars, wheel frames pivotally connected to the side bars, standards pivoted to the frame, arm-rests connecting said standards, a spring secured to the frame, a seat supported on said spring and independent of the standards and arm-rests, a back for and adjustable in relation to the seat carried by the spring, and means for retaining said back in its different positions of adjustment comprising a dog and a member with which said dog is adapted to engage, said dog being pivoted to said back and said member pivoted to the frame. 7
