Description

H. O. PINLAY.
ARTISANS INDIA RUBBER GLOVE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 24, 1911.
Patented July 8, 1913.
WIT/VESSESZ HERBERT CECIL FINLAY, OF SYDNEY, NEXT SOU'ZII .VALES, AUSTRALIA.
ARTISANS INDIA-RUBBER GLOVEi.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1 913.
Application filed August 24, 1911. Serial No. 645,784.
To all Il/l()HI/ it may concern Be it known that I, I'TI'IRBERT CECIL FIN- LAY, subject of the King of Great Iiritain and Ireland, residing at 75 York street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Artisans India-Rubber Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
In certain trades and professions, the employment of india-rubber gloves is an imperative necessity; but such gloves have their drawbacks, especially if small articles have to be handled. These india-rubber gloves are merely digital sacks into which the fingers of the operator can readily be introduced; consequently, the sense of touch, which is very delicate at the finger tips, is largely neutralized. This invention has been devised with a View to minimize, to some extent, the disadvantages that are inseparable from the use of these gloves, and thus materially assist the operator in doing better work.
In giving effect to the invention, three distinct improvements are made in indiarubber gloves: to) the tips of the fingers of the gloves are made to fit the tips of the fingers of the hand within; (7)) the tips of the index finger and thumb are provided with artificial projecting finger nails; (0) the thumb side of the index finger is provided with undercut ribs, laced either longitudin'ally or transverse y. The thumb may be provided with two nails, one placed normally, the other over the fleshy inner part of the thumb within the glove. But in order that the invention maybe properly understood, reference is made tothe accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section of the index finger of an india-rubber glove with a human finger within. Fig. 2 is an external view of the sa'me, showing the external longitudinal ribs. Fig. 3 shows an index finger and thumb approached to one another, the index finger having transverse ribs. Fi 4 is a cross section, on the line 1-2 0 Fig. 2, showing the conformation of the ribs on the index finger. Fig. 5 shows how a small article may be gripped between the index finger and thumb of the glove.
A is a human finger inserted in the finger B of an india-rubber glove: the extreme end of the glove fingers are adapted to fit the tips of the human-fingers within. The exterior of the glove finger is provided with a finger nail C over the place where the human nail is within the glove. 'lhe finger nail (i will project from the end ot the glove-finger and .will be slightly undercut, as shown. On the thumb side of the index finger are a number of longitudinal ribs 1), slightly undercut, as shown at Fig. 4. The longitudinal' ribs D may be applied to any or all of the glove fingers, but they are most essential to the index finger. The thumb E of the glove will also be provided wit-h a nail c in a normal position, but another nail 6' may be added and located on the inner side of the glove thumb over the fleshy part of the human thumb within, as shown at Fig. For certain classes of work. the ribs, instead of being longitudinal, as shown at Fig. 2, may be placed transversely, as shown at Fig.3.
.At Fig. 5 may be seen one mode of p cking up a small object, which will be seen at f clutched between the nail ot. the index finger and the inner nail c of the thumb.
The glove fingers may be maiuit'act-ured as stalls which may be fitted over the lingers of old fashioned gloves, only as a temporary expedient.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
In combination, an india rubber glove finger provided with an artificial nail and an india rubber glove thumb lYt'lVltlGd with an artificial nail adapted to register with the fieshy part of the thumb tip and to co-act with the nail and said glove finger.
In testimony whereof" l have signed my name to this specification in the presence oi. two subscribing witnesses.
HERBER'I CECIL FIN LAY.
