To all whom it may concern:
Be it .known that I, MARY E. MANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a surgical appliance which may be secured to the body of a person upon whom a surgical operation has been performed, the device being particularly useful in operations of that character in which an incision has been made in the abdominal wall of the patient. This invention will not only protect such a wound or incision, but will also collect any pus which may gather at or exude from the incision; and the pus having been collected, may be subjected to microscopic or other examination and thus enable the attending surgeon to determine certain matters concerning the health and condition of the patient, if so desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hereinafter-described invention; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of that particular member which directly engages the body of the patient, the view showing that side of said member which comes opposite to the body; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1'.
The body of the patient comes into direct contact with a sheet 1. This sheet is made from fine rubber or other similar pliable material, and thqmember 1 tapers in thickness outwardly from its middle, being thickest at its outer edges and thinner in the mid dle, as best shown in Fig. 3. The thinnest part of the member 1 is cut away so as to' leave a perforation 2, the size and shape of said perforation depending upon the char'ac ter of the incision and of the operation. which has been performed, the device beingapplied in such manner that the perforation 2 comes directly over and in registration with the incision or 'wound in the body 3 of the patient. Projecting outwardly from the perforated member 1 are walls 4:, which walls, together with the'sheet l, terminate in a funnel-like end 5. A cap or protector 6, the edges 7 of which fit over the walls 4 (see Fig. 3) may be used in connection with the device and said cap 6 may be secured either to the funnel-like end 5 or in any other manner. The cap 6 is provided with perforations 8, which permlt ventilation,
and the cap may be moved from the full l1 n e position in Fig. 1 to. the dotted'line position in said figure whenever the surgeon desires to inspect the condition of the wound.
To the funnel-like end'5 a hose 9 is secured and this hose 10, there being a glass tube 11 intermediate hose 9 and bag 10. Just outside of the walls 4 are the ribs 12 and 13, to which the straps or belts 14 and 15 are adapted to be secured.

The edge of the perforation 2 being very thin, the same will fit tightly a ainst the patients body so as to leave absol iitely no space be tween the sheet 1 and the patients body. Any pus or liquid which may escape from the wound 'or incision will pass through the perforation 2 and over the edge of said perforation, and from thence it will be carried down through the funnel 5 and into the enlargement 16 of the pipe 11 or into the bottle 10. It will be obvious, of course, that when the appliance is strapped upon the patients bodythe funnel 5 will be pointed downwardly, and it will be equally obvious that many changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. Asurgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material, said sheet be ng provided with a perforation, said sheet being taported in thickness, the thinnest portion being adjacent said perforation, means for securing said sheet to the patients body, and means for collecting the liquid or other matter passing through said perforation.

Asurgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material provided with a perfora tion and tapering in thickness outwardly from said perforation, a wall adjacent the outer ed e of said sheet, a cap cooperating with said wall so as to seal said perforation, means for securing the appliance to the body of the patient, and means for collectof the patient, and said.

Asurgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material provided with a perforation and tapering in thickness outwardly from said perforation, a funnel-like member with which said sheet is connected, means for collecting the liquid or other matter which passes through said funnel, and means for securing said perforated sheet upon the body of the patient.

A surgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material provided with a perforation and tapering in thickness outwardly from said perforation, loops secured to said sheet, and straps or bandages in connection with said loops, said straps being adapted to bind said sheet upon the body of the patient, and means in connection with said sheet for collecting the liquid or other matter which passes through said perforation.

Asurgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material provided with a perforation and tapering in thickness outwardly from said perforation, loops secured to said sheet, and straps or bandages in connection with said loops, said straps being adapted to bind said sheet upon the body of the patient, and means in connection with said sheet for collecting the liquid or other matter which passes through said perforation, there being a protecting cap in connection with said sheet, said cap being adapted to cover over said perforation.
6. Asurgical appliance comprising a sheet of flexible material provided with a perforation and tapering in thickness outwardly from said perforation, loops secured to said sheet, and straps or bandages in connection with said loops, said straps bein adapted to bind said sheet upon the b0 y of the patient, and means in connection with said sheet for collecting the liquid or other mat- .ter which passes through said perforation,
there being a perforated cap in connection with said sheet, said cap being adapted to cover over said perforation.
