Description

-J AMES Y n I L LAN, o it lP E MNT-o' NIE "W 'Y bait. r
Letters Patent No. 1Q6,709, dated Afugust 23,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAIN-TUBES.
The Schedule referred to'in these Letters Pratelnt'axrxd making'part of the-same I, JAMEsnlCMIn-Lan, of 'the town of Perinton,"
county oi' Monroe, and 'State of New Yorlghave in- \e;1ted a certain new method of'Draining Land and `Creating Water-Poner, of wllichvthe following isl a specification,
' The nature of my invention lconsists in inserting pipe or tubing, of any diameter or material, into the earth, vertically or perpendicularly, forthe purpose o'fv draining land, carryingoi snrtace and surplus water,
draining cellars, and creating waterpower,'as set forth `in thet'ollowing specification and aeoompanyingdrawings, which are a part ot? the same.
My invention consists in combining 'with a draintube, driven into the earth, a screen, crmsisting of a fcross-tube atthe top, which is Vzuljust-able to different l positions, vto fit the channel or cavity'in whieh it may he placed.
A A represent the sections ol' pipe or tube, which,
as they are gradually driven into the earth, are united h y ordinary couplings, o u. This tubing may he gaspipe or other material, and of anydesired size.
The lower end is provided with an ordinary drivingpoint, B, such as is used in well-tubing; also with perforatiens b for the discharge ofthe drainage, as` hereinafter described. I. r
I contemplate, in driving the tubing, the use of drive-reds, sueh as are shown in my patent on wellt-uoing, dated Mayd, 1870, in whien case, if desired,
when the -tuhe is driven deep, ei'rough, the driviugpoint may be driven deeper, so as to leave the lower end ottlre tube open'. In this 'case the pernations b b may, in some instances, be dispensed with but the point B :nay lie either fixed or loose, as circumstances retpiire.'1
' The npr er end of thetuhing has n screen or strain- 1 er, C, u'heli consists ot'fa short orossdieadoi' tubingg.. screwed upon the main'tube, and open at both ends, with the exception ofa covering ot' wire-mesh, wnieh strains hn: water that enters.
The advantaffe'of this peculiar form of the strainer is, thatvit can be yturned to any position, so that its length will rest `longitudinally in'any channehor depression in thesurfaoeto be drained, wliieli'is very desirable, in order to get the strainer' as low asipossible. IliisI elaim as a special novelty in my invention. l The operation is as-follo'ws-z l The tl'ibing` is driven down till thetests lshow that the water strata loelo'ii7 have been reached.' The sere: n or strainer C is then applied 'close to tnesnrtaee 'to be drained, and the 'preliminarypreparations. are then com plete.
AThe water from thesurface sinks through the tube, int-o the sub-strata, and soon entirely` disappears, as there is no limit tothe capabilities of the proess.
ItA is notonl y useful in draining wastelands, but'also in draining cellars,;excavations, 85e.
It may also. beapplied tbrdisoh'arging the Water ot" waterepowers, vby simply making the tubing ot' proper size to accommodate the volume,:downwardfas the disohargeis diti'used so quickly in the sub-strata that no appreciable rise takes place- VA r l This arriuigement-dii'ers from ordinary ivelltubiiig, not only in forming a eonneeti'on Vsimply between the -snrtace and the water strata, but also in haringthe Witnesses Geo. FRAUENBERGER, C. T. LEADLEY.
