To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER C. BRASHEAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oastleton, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper Box, of which the-following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the cut blank from which the box is made; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the completed box; Fig. 3 is a partial section on lines III--II-I of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4' is a perspective showing the end flap in unlocked position.
The invention relates to that class of paper boxes which are made from one sheet or blank of paper, and which by folding of parts can be converted into a complete box without the. use of fasteners other than the folds of paper.
The novel features of my improved box are (1) the tabs at the upper corners of the box, which act as reinforcements, and prevent the box from tearing at such places;
(2) the configuration of the end flaps which cause their edges to abut against the" upper inner surface of the side walls and lock the flaps and the box against horizontal movement, and (3) the end extensions of the end flaps which look the end flaps against vertical movement. These various novel features enable me to provide a box which is more durable than the paper boxes now in use, and at the same time provide positive locking means which prevents the box from collapsing when in use.
Referrlng to the drawing, 2' is the bottom of the box having side walls 3 3, and side wall folds 4 '4, which form the inner-surface of the side walls 3.- The side wall folds 4 4 have tabs 5 5 projecting from their vertical edges adjacent to their tops, and the side walls 3 3have extensions 6 6 extending from the ends of the side walls, and having notched portions 7 7 which are adapted to interlock one with the other. The end walls 8 8' have flaps 9 9, and from the flaps 9 9' are extensions 10 10. The tabs 5 5 are cut downward at a slight angle from the top edge of the side walls 3 3 as are the side wall extensions 6 6' in order that in assembling the box, theflaps 9 9 of the end walls may be folded thereover. It will be seen that the flaps 9 9' near the point of connection with the end walls 8-8 are 'slightly out or beveled inward in order to provide a clearance of the ends of the side walls 3 3'. Below the point or shoulder 11 the. end folds are slightly broadened so that they may bear against the ends'of the inner side walls 4 4 and thus be locked against outward or horizontal movement. The extensions 10 10 are of the same width as the bottom of the box so that they abut against the ends of the inner side walls 4 4', and hold the end walls againstvertical movement.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 is folded into a box as follows": The side wall folds 4 4 are bent over on the lines aa and are preferably gummed to the inner surfaces of the side walls 3 3'. The side walls 3 3 fold on the line 6-6 and the side wall extensions 6 6 are then interlocked at the point 7 7 fThis gives a general shape to the box. The end walls 8 8' are folded on the lines c-c and the flaps 9 9' are then folded over the side wall extensions 6 6, and the reinforcing tabs 5 5' upon the line d-d so that the edges of. the folds 8 below the point 1111 will snap in against the vertical edges of the inner side walls 4 4, and. the end extension 10 will snap down under the lower edge of the inner side walls 4. It will thus be seen that from the points 11 11 to the oints 12 12 the edges of the end. folds w'il abut at the lower part of the vertical edges of the inner side walls 4 4, thus furnishing an extended locking surface against horizontal movement; and that the end extensions 10 10 will underlie and bear against the under surfaces of the edges of the inner side walls 4 4, thus giving a locking surface against vertical movement; and that this double lock will be positive in effect. It will also be seen that the reinforcing tabs 5 5 not only reinforce and strengthen the corners of the box, but also provide against the end thrust, and serve to keep the end walls from bellying outward. p
It is obvious that modifications may be made in my device without departing fromm inventlon, since hat I claim Is :I
1. As a new article of manufacture, a
side wall comprising a sldewall proper, a
lateral side wall extension, projecting therefrom at each end, said extensions being reversely notched to form an interlock when the parts are brought to position, a side wall tabs of the infolded side wall folds being likewise embraced, while the end wall flap extensions bear upon the bottom and are interlocked between the bottom and the adjacent lower edges of the side wall folds.
2.' As a new article of manufacture, a paper box or tray formed from a single blank or sheet adapted to be folded to form and presenting, when so folded, outwardlyflaring sides and comprising a rectangular bottom with side and end walls extending therefrom, each end comprising an end wall proper,'an end wall flap, and a flap extension,
the ends or margins of the end walls diverging; as they recede from the bottom, and the en s or margins of the flaps converging as they extend toward the flap extensions, each of said margins being provided with a shoulder adjacent the line of fold between the end wall and end wall flap, and the flap extension being of a length substantially equal to the width of the bottom; and each side wall comprising a side wall proper, with side wall extensions projecting laterally therefrom, and a side wall fold, the lines of bend or fold between said walls and their extensions diverging from the bottom at an angle substantially equal to the divergence of the ends of the end walls aforesaid, and theends of the side wall folds converging at a like angle toward the outer edge of the fold; and a tab extending outwardly from each end of each side wall fold adjacent the-line of fold between the side wall and the side wall fold.
