WILLIAM ZINDEL, 0J3 IBIGELOW', ARKANSAS.
DOOR-CHECK.
ove ess.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILTJAM Zinnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigelow, in the count of Perry and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Checks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door checks and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will securely retain the door in its open position and which will admit of said door being readily removed to its closed position.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is formed of a single strip of yielding; metal and which can be readily applied to the floor of a structure.
A further object is to provide means for guiding and limiting the movement of the yielding portion of the device.
Still another object of the invention resides in. the provision of a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful. in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompan ing' drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a side elevation of my device showing the same applied'to use. Fig. 52 is a detail perspective view thereof; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of a strip of metal to form the device prior to the bending thereof to finished formation.
.ln describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corres tionding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a strip of spring metal bent intermediate of its ends to form upper and lower spaced strip sections 2 and 3 respectively.
in order to secure the device to the floor of a structure and at the same time retain the upper strip section 2 parallel to the lower section 3, the screws i and 5 are passed through said spaced strip sections 2 and 3 Epecification of Letters Patent.

and are adapted for engagement with the floor in the path of a swinging door 3. The upper section 2 of the strip is struck up intermediate the screws t and 5 to form an abutment or the like 6 and that portion of said section 2 on the opposite side of the screw t is also struck up as shown at 7, thereby forming); a substantial channel-way or the like between the same and said abutment 6. The strip section 2 continuing from the struck up portion 7 is inclined forwardly and downwardly as shown at 8 and then bent rearwardly to rest on the upper face of the lower section 3, the extreme free end of said strip section 2 being provided with a central slot 9 adapted to receive therein the screw t. By allowing the screw 4: to extend through the slot 9, the move ment of the extreme free end of the upper section will be properly guided so not to permit a torsional movement which is extremely essential to the effective operation of the device.
In practice, this device is secured to the floor of a structure at the extremity of the path of a swinging door in its open position, the forward end of the device pointing toward the door. lVhen the door has been drawn to its open position and it is desired to retain the sai'n-e in such position, the same is forced against the forward end of the device which will allow the under face of the door to ride over the beveled face 8, as the latter yields under pressure of the door. The yielding of the forward end of the upper section of the strip readily per mittcd by the provision of the slot 9 in the free end of the upper strip section, the screw extending through said slot guiding said strip section in its movement, and as the door pass s beyond the beveled or inclined portion 8, said upper strip section will re turn under tension, to its normal position to retain the door in the chan1i-el-way be tween the struck up portions 6 and 7. The door will then be retained in its open position until such time as it is desired to close the same, when it will he necessary to force the forward. or inclined end 8 of the device downwardly in order to release the door from its engagement with the upper strip section of the device. This latter releasing action may be accomplished by pressing on the forward end of the device with the foot, so that little or no energy will be exerted in the complete operation of the device.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to wi hout departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is An article of manufacture comprising a door check formed of a single strip of metal bent to form a loop provided with spaced OH Set portions on its upper face having vertical and horizontal faces, said off set portions being positioned adjacent the forward end of said loop, the forward end of the loop being beveled downwardly from the horizontal face of the forward off set portion, said forward end being bent inwardly from the downwardly beveled portion and terminating in an inwardly slotted extremity slidable longitudinally upon the lower end of the loop, securing and guiding means extending through the upper portion of the loop between the otf set portions thereof, through the slot in the forward end of the loop and through the opposite end of the loop to guide the free end of said loop, and additional securing means positioned through the upper and lower portions of said loop. 7
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
