PAPER-CLIP.
Specification .of Letters ratent.
Patented Feb. 3. iota.
Application filed January 8, 1913. Serial No. 740,846.
Z 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. WnsoN, a
subject of the King of, Great Britain, residfaces and normally occupying the same general plane therewith and adapted to overlie one side of the paper or article with which it is connected and to exert its pressure immediately along the axial center of each of the gripping surfaces, whereby to maximize the locking efficiency of the clip and positively prevent its accidental derangement from the papers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. clip which will be so constructed as to facilitate its connection with or its disconnection from the papers.
Vith these and other ObJQCtS in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features 'of construction, combination and arrangement of parts. as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings F igure' 1 is a perspective view of the clip; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, showing the application of the same to one of the corners of a package of papers; Fig. 3 is a similar, view, looking at the reverse side thereof Fig. 4 is another view similar to Fig. 2,. showing the application of the clip to one of the longitudinalsides of the package; and Fig. 5 is an edge -view of the clip.
The clip is constructed from a single length of springy wire bent terminally to provide companion gripping surfaces 1, which consist of a plurality of convolutions 2 occupying the same general plane and arranged so that the large outermost convolutions are offset, as at 3, into a connecting or pressure bar 4,. the offset portions 2 of said outermost convolutions serving to hold the connecting portion 4 alined with the innermost small convolutions of the surfaces 1,
as clearly'illustrated in Fig. 1 of the draw mg. The bar 1 is straight throughout whereby to present a relatively broad contacting surface against one side of the package of sheets with which the clip is associated and to apply its pressure against the sheets at one side of the surfaces 1, whereby to positively cause the papers or sheets to be securely interposed between the surfaces 1 and bar 4, respectively. The convolutions 5 of the surfaces 1 are spaced from the connecting offset portions 3 of the outermost large convolutions 1, whereby-to form intervening paper guiding passages 6 therebetween to facilitate the initial application of the clip to papers as will be seen. 7 he clip is so constructed that it may be applied either to the corners of the package or to the sides thereof, as shown in the different figures of the drawings. The bar 4 may be disposed outermost upon the package so that the clip will not conceal the written matter contained on the sheet, while the relative arrangement of the bar 4 and the surfaces 1 is such as will maximize the gripping efiiciency of the article. The intervening spaces 6 which are formed incident to such construction has been found t0,
greatly facilitate the work involved in placing the clip on the sheets.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the 8.5 invention will be readily understood without requiring a more entended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim is r 1. A' paper clip constructed from a single 9 length of springy wire having terminal contacting' surfaces consisting of many convolutions and a. connecting portion extending into the outermost convolutions of said surfaces and offset whereby to be alined with 11 y Q memes length of springy wire haying groups of whereby to form intervening paper guiding identically formed convolutions, the convolutions of each group occupying the same general plane with each other, a connecting bar between the respective groups and offset portions connecting the outermost convo1utions of each group with said bar and spaced from the 7 adjacent convolutions passages therebetween. L,
In testimony whereof I afiix my slgnajture in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN ,A. WILSON. Witnesses;
JOHN W. A BOTT, H. P. HEAHE.
