CHAIN-TOOL.
Speciflcation of Letters Patent.
application filed August 7, 1913. Serial No. 783,466.
Be it known that I, JoHN A. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Chain Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to chain tools, such as are used for the purpose of opening chain links and closing the same, and has for its object to provide an implementof this sort which may be readily utilized particularly in the instance of chains whose links form a part of an assembled structure and are therefore difiicult of access.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description. I
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chain tool. Fig. 2 a broken side elevation of such tool with the around an open link preparatory to closing the latter. Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the jaws closed around the link, and Fig.4 is a perspective view, partly broken, showing the handles distended and with the parts in position preparatory to opening a chain lin Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the .drawing.
My improvement comprises two members 1, 2, that are pivoted together by a pin 3, said members having elongated handles 4, 5, extending rearwardly therefrom. Formed mtegralwith the handle 4 is an offset socket 6 which extends laterally from the inner handle, this face of said handle and is staggered or deflected so that it extends at an angle to said angular disposition being such that the rear portion 'of the socket adjoins the side face of the handle 4, while the forward portion of such socket is deflected away from such handle. The handle 5 has formed integral therewith a depending wedge member 7 which is likewise deflected or angularly disposed with respect to said handle, so thatwhen the handles are comjaws distended and in position pressed this wedge will enter the socket 6, for the purpose presently to be explained. The forward extremities of the members 1, 2, are formed into complementary jaws 8, 9, whose inner faces are curved as shown at 10, 11, so that in closed position they will conform to the general shape or contour of a chain link, and centrally disposed within said curved inner faces and lengthwise thereof are grooves 12, 13, within which the chain links may be fitted so as to preserve their proper position when they are closed by the action of the jaws. The extreme front ends of the inner faces of said jaws, beyond the curved portions, are flat as shown at 14, 15, and are in alinement with the inner longitudinal surface of their respective handles, these fiat portions of the jaws being useful in finally clamping or pinching the extremity of a chain link wire. In utilizing mv improvement for the purpose of closing an open link, the latter, indicated by a, is placed in position between the j aws, as shown at Fig. 2, and the handles compressed to close the link as shown at Fig. 3. When my improvement is employed for the purpose of opening a link, such link, as indicated by b, is placed horizontally over the socket 6 and the handles compressed, thereby causing the wedge to enter the eye of the link and pass downwardly into the socket, thereby opening such link.
In assembled chain structures such as are employed, for instance, as an armor for automobile tires, it is extremely difficult to open a link, but the angular arrangement of the wedge and socket of my improved tool renders this operation quite easy, and in simultaneously closing some links and opening others, ployed with great facility, sinceno displace- Patented Feb. 17, 314.
my improvement may be emment of the chain structure is necessary owing to the angular arrangement of such wedge and socket.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A chain tool, comprising pivoted members, handles extending rearwardly from said members, an offset socket integral with one handle and extending laterally therefrom and disposed in angular relation thereto, and a wedge member depending from the other handle disposed in angular relation thereto, said wedge adapted to enter said vided with an angularly disposed wedge that 10 socket when the handles are compressed. cooperates with thesocket to open a link.
2. A chain tool comprising a, pair of mem- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature bers arranged in ivotal crossing relation, in presence of two Witnesses.
