COMBINED SEAT AND WALKING-CANE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. VALLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Seats and alking-Canes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable seats, and it has particular reference to a portable seat which when folded or collapsed may be utilized as a walking cane.
The invention has for its object to construct a simple and eflicient port-able seat comprising a pedestal, leg members hingedly connected therewith and capable of forming, when folded or collapsed, an extension of said pedestal, hingedly supported seat members, and means connected with and actuated by said sea-t members whereby, when the latter are manipulated, motion shall be transmitted to the leg members, whereby said leg members will be expanded when the seat members are unfolded and collapsed when the seat members are folded together.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the means for actuating the leg members to expand and collapse the same.
lVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invent-ion, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the improved portable seat collapsed to form a walking cane, an extension member being connected therewith to increase the length of the cane. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the device converted into a seat. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view, showing the joint connecting the pedestal with the legs and a portion of the mechanism whereby the legs are actuated. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken on the Specification of Letters Patent.

line 44: in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view on the line in Fig. 3.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The pedestal l is provided at its upper end with leaves 2, 2 connected therewith by hinges said leaves serving when folded or collapsed to constitute a handle, then being provided with slots 4. When the leaves are extended, as seen in Fig. 2, they serve to constitute 1 seat. The pedestal is provided at its lower end with notches 5 wherein members 6 are pivotally secured, said leg members being of such shape that, when folded together, they will combine to constitute an extension of the pedestal 1, while when unfolded, they will radiate from the lower end of the pedestal and form legs or supporting members. Said legs are provided at their upper ends with heads 7 of rounded or arcuate shape concentric with the pins or fastenings S on which they are pivoted. The heads 7 are provided with teeth or cogs 9 and with studs 10, the latter serving, when the legs are extended, to form abutments whereby the outward movement of said legs is limited.
The lower end of the pedestal has a recess or bore 11 from which oppositely disposed radial slots 12 extend outwardly through the pedestal. The bore 11 accommodates a slidable pin or rod 13 having a cross bar 14; that extends through the slots 12, and the ends of which are connected by link braces 15 with the leaves 2, so that by unfolding the latter, the pin 13 will be moved in a downward direction, while by folding the leaves the pin will be moved upwardly. The rod 13 has a button or enlargement 17 formed -on its lower end, adapted to loosely engage the upper ends of the legs to slightly spread the latter apart when the pin is moved in a downward direction. Provided upon an intermediate portion of said pin 13 are teeth or cogs 16 adapted to mesh with the cogs 9 on the heads of the leg members 6 for the purpose of actuating said leg members to fully extend or to collapse the same, according to the direction in which the pin is moved. The pin is also provided with studs 17 adapted to engage the cogs 9 for the purpose of maintaining the leg members in folded position. As before stated, when the leg members are extended to the desired and predetermined supporting position the studs 10 abut against the last of the teeth 16 and prevent a further outward movement of the legs and downward movement of the pin 13.
The leg members are provided at their lower ends with screw threads 18 adapted to be engaged by a correspondingly threaded sleeve or connecting member 19 at the upper end of an extension member 20 which may thus be detachably connected with the lower ends of the leg members for the purpose of enabling the device to be conveniently utilized as a walking cane. The sleeve 18 also serves to secure the leg members firmly in folded relation,
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The construction is simple, and the device affords a portable seat which may be conveniently carried about and which will be particularly useful when attending out-door sports, game and other meetings.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. A device of the character described comprising a pedestal, leg members hinged to the lower end of the pedestal, said leg members having heads provided with cogs,
a slidable member arranged axially within the pedestal and having teeth meshing with the cogs on the'heads of the legs to extend and fold the same, a stud in the sliding member spaced from the teeth and adapted to engage the cogs to prevent movement of the legs when folded together, and means connected with the slide to actuate the same.
2. A device of the character described including a pedestal, leg members hinged to the lower end of said pedestal, a rod slidable within said pedestal, a serration of teeth formed intermediately upon said rod, cogs provided on the upper end of said legs and adapted to mesh with the teeth when said rod is moved downward, abutments formed on the upper extremity of the legs and adapted to engage said teeth to limit the outward movement of said legs, means connected to said rod to actuate the same, a stud on said rod and adapted to engage said cogs to hold the legs in a folded position when the rod is man upper position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
