DRAIN-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 17, 1913. Serial No. 801,510.
Be it known that l, Loris N. lf'ixonn'r, residing at lreseott. in the county ol" Yavapai and State ol Arizona` a citizen ot the United States. have invented Certain new and uset'ul improvements in Drain-Valves; and l do hereb)Y deelare the following to be a full, clear.` and exa'et deseription otl the inventioinsueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to m .ite and use the same.
My invention relates 'to improvements in drain valves.
lt has t'or itsl ohjeel to provid: an alltomatie draintvalve l'or steam pipes, steam eylinders and the like.
It further hasl'or its object to provide t drain valve which is automatiealhy elosed by steam pressure and automatieally opened when released from steam pressure.
lt further has for its objet-t to provide a drain valve which when employed, Afor instance, in eonneetion with a steam cylinder will automatiealhv drain the high pressure pipe connected with the steam chest and the low pressure pipe eomieeted with the steam cylinder.
It further has for its object to provide a drain valve having` a minimum number ot parts or members and to mount the working' elements thereot' in one part so that when said part is removed the working elements will be. removed.
It further has tor its objet-t to provide a drain valve which van he employed to simultaneous-lv drain one or more pipes and o vlinders.
lt further has for its ohjeet to provide a drain valve whieh is, simple. inexpensive and durable in construction and easy and etteetive in operation.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a Central vert-leal Zseetion ot the drain valve showing it in the position it oeeupies when '.under pressure elosing both drain ports.
Fig. 2 a eenta'al vertieal lseelion of the drain valve showin;r it' in the position it oeeupies when released trom pressure opening both drain ports. Fig. 2 drain valve. Fig. 'r a vertieal sert ion ot' the outer part or member ol' tlu` drain valve.' Fig. 5 a vertieal seetion ot' 1- inner partI i, ith the valve j' or member ot' the drain va t v therein. Fig'. (i a vertical eet1on ot the a top plan view ot the louter part of another forni of the drain valve.
ln the drawings` in whieh like reference eharaeters denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 reina-stents the drain valve haviuzgr an outer member or easing1r Q and an inner member or plugr 3. The outer member lower part 4 ot whieh is made largerin eireumlerenee than the upper part thus toi-militer a valve seat G, a high pressure inlet 7 at the top which. if the. valve is employed in eonneetion with a steam Cylinder, is eonneeted with the steam chest by Vmea-ns oi' pipe 8, a high pressure by-pass 9 eonneetingthe lower and upper parts 4 and 5 ot' the ehamber, and a low pressure port' 10 adapted to be connected with the steam ovlinder by means of a pipe 11. The inner member or plug' 3 is provided with :tbody portion lfl which tits and is secured in the ehamber 4t b v means of serewthreads 14 en- Jagingr serewthreads on they outer memberA the upper end of said body portion abutting againstA the seat 6 of the outer member and provided with a chamber 16 ing a high pressure port 1S eommunieating with the blv-pass high pressure port f) of the. outer member Q and the lower end provided with a low pressure port 19 eommunieating with the low pressure port of the outel` member. an oetagon shaped flange 20 abutting against the lower end ot theouter member or easingr 2, providing means whereb v a wrench or other tool may he applied to insertV or remove the. plue.v
A. valve Q1 is loealed in the ehamher 1G ot' the inner member or plug provided with a hollow stem Q2. closed -at its upper end. provided with outlet ports Q3 and 2l and extending through a bore Q3 in the inner member or plug: having a serewthreaded boss 2G thereon. A spiral springr 97 is mounted on the upper end of the stem within a reeess QS in the inner membenor plug, the upper end ol the spring hearingr against the under tace ot the val` e and the i lower end against the bottoni ol the reeess' i 2S, Said spring serving. when expanded. to i hohl the valve against the seat (i, establishing communiration. bv means of the liv-pass high pressure port .l and high pressure port 1S with the ehamher lo, establishingr corn- Patented Mar. 24,1914.l
or easing 2 is provided with a chamber the Communicating with the chamber 5 and hav-l munication With" tlie chamber 16 and the low pressure ports 10 and ltlrand establishing communication with the chamber 16 and l readily ground.
In operation, steam under pressure passes through the pipe 8 from the steam chest into chamber 5 forcing the valve 21 upon the valve seat formed by the bottom of chamber 16 and compressing 'the spiral spring 27, closing the ports 18, 19, 23 and 24 and when the valve is released from steam pressure the spring 27 Will expand forcing said valve against seat 6 opening ports 1S, 1S), 23 and 24 whereupon all the steam and Water from steam chest and steam cylinder will pass through the high and low pressure ports into the lower portion of the chamber 1G, below the valve 2l, and from thence through the ports and 24 into'hollou7 stem 22 and exhausts therefrom. When it is desired to drain a number ot' steam chests and steam cylinders the modified form of outer part of drain valve is used, as shown in Fig. o, in which 29 indicates a series of high pressure ports and 30 a/series of lou7 pressure port-s designed to be connected with a number of steam chests and steam vcylinders respectively.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details it construction and arrangement as .herein described and illustrated, it is marii est that variations and moditications may be made in the fea.- -tures of construction .mi arrangement in the adaptation ot the device to the various conditions of use without departing from th'c spirit and scope of my invent-ion and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modiieations as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the'terms of the following claims.
