PARTITION FOR BEDS.
ooaees.
Application filed September 5, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. '7, 1914. Serial No. 788,195.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT SCHWARZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Partitions for Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to collapsible frames for beds and similar structures, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a collapsible or foldable frame that can be easily placed upon a bed to provide separate sleeping compartments and inclosures for the occupants of the bed, thereby allowing the occupants that degree of comfort as is conducive to slumber.
Another object of this invention is to provide a metallic collapsible frame that can be advantageously used in connection with a large bed to divide the same whereby the bed can be readily used for safely holding a number of infants.
A further object of this invention is to provide a collapsible frame of the above type that is durable, easy to set up and highly efficient for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel structure, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a frame as arranged upon a bed; Fig. 2 is a plan of the frame, illustrating a modification of the invention; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a foldable partition adapted to form part of the frame; Fig. 4 is an end view of the foldable partition illustrating the manner of connecting said partition to the frame; Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan of a portion of the frame showing one of the connections thereof; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the frame illustrating another connection; and Fig. 7 is a plan of a portion of the frame showing still another connection.
A collapsible frame in accordance with this invention is rectangular in plan and is preferably made of light and durable tubing. Tubing can be readily cut into desired lengths and provided with connections that will permit of the frame being easily folded and collapsed to occupy a comparatively small space when not in use. The frame comprises side pieces 1 and 2 having the ends thereof provided with three- way connections 3 and 3. The side pieces 1 and 2 are arranged in parallelism and the connections 3 and 3 are adapted to be connected by end pieces 4 and 5.
The connections 3 are diagonally disposed relatively to each other, also the connections 3, whereby the end pieces 4L and 5 can be swung inwardly into parallelism with the pieces 1 and 2. To accomplish this the connection 3 and one end of each end piece have hinge members 6, preferably of the barrel and pin type, and to lock the opposite ends of the end pieces 4; and 5 at the connections 3 I resort to connections one of which is best shown in Fig. 5. Each of the connections 3 has a stud 7 provided with a radially disposed pin 8 and loosely mounted upon the end of each end piece is a sleeve 9 adapted to extend onto the stud 7. The sleeve 9 is loosely retained upon the end piece 4 by a pin 10 or other fastening means extending through a slot 11 provided therefor in the sleeve. The sleeve 9 can be partially rotated and the outer end of said sleeve has a bayonet slot 12 to receive the pin 8, said bayonet slot and said pin constituting means for locking the sleeve 9 in engagement with the stud 7 and thereby affording means for connecting the end pieces 4 and 5 to the side pieces 1 and 2.
The end pieces 4 and 5, intermediate the ends thereof, have I connections 13. These connections have slotted socket members 14:, said members longitudinally alining whereby a longitudinal intermediate piece 15 can be placed between the connections 13. The ends of the intermediate piece 15 are closed as at 16 and provided with pins 17 adapted to engage in the slotted members 14.
Arranged in the intermediate piece 15, adjacent to the ends thereof, are plugs 18, said plugs and the intermediate piece having alining openings 19. The openings 19 are adapted to receive pivoted pins 20 carried by a foldable partition that can be arranged longitudinally of the frame and supported in a vertical position, as shown in jas Fig. 1. The foldable partition is preferably made of two reinforced cushion frames 21 hinged or otherwise connected as at 22 whereby the cushion frames can be opened and closed. The frames can therefore be maintained in a sanitary condition and thoroughly aired by simply detaching the same from the intermediate piece 15. To support the partition in a folded and vertical position the ends of the cushion frames 21 have pivoted braces 23 provided with hook shaped ends to engage in keepers 24 carried by corner posts 25 supported by the connections 3 and 3 The lower ends of the corner post 25 and the upper ends of the connections 3 and 3 have hinge members 26 that permit of the corner posts 25 being folded into parallelism with the side pieces 1 and 2. The upper ends of the corner post 25 are provided with heads or ornamentations 27 and keepers 28, said keepers receiving the ends of the rods 29 that serve as supports for curtains or draperies 30. The curtains or draperies can be employed upon one or all sides of the frame to form an inclosure, particularly When the frame is upon a bed and the bed occupied by infants.
Contiguous to an end of each side piece is a connection 31, similar to the connections 13 and the connections 31 can be connected by the transverse rod 32, said rod being in parallelism with the end piece 1. The rod 32, intermediate the ends thereof, has a connection 33 for a short intermediate piece 34 that can be placed between the connections 33 and 13. The rod 32 and the short intermediate piece 34 divides the rectangular frame into three compartments and it is upon these rods and the side and end pieces of the frame that cushioned walls can be detachably mounted. Side and end walls 35 have been illustrated in Fig. 1 as cooperating with the longitudinal partition in providing two parallel sleeping compartments upon a bed 36 and these compartments can be comfortably occupied without danger of one occupant interfering with the other.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the transverse rod 32 and the short intermediate piece 34 permit of partitions and walls being erected to form three compartments for infants, two of the compartments being longitudinally of the bed and the other compartment transversely thereof.
In Fig. 7 there is illustrated a connection 37 that can be used in lieu of the connections 13. The connection 37 has a spring pressed pin 38 adapted to enter the end of a rod or intermediate piece, said pin being easily shifted through the medium of a knob or handle 39 whereby the rod or intermediate piece can be released.
It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further clescription, and while in the drawing there is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
