BA G-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 11, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER C. SHAVER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Bronx, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for bags, such as for example tobacco bags, bags for containing ground coffee, and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved closure for bags, which is simple in construction, strong and reliable, not expensive, and which permits of opening or closing the bag by pulling cords in the mouth of the bag in opposite directions, thus greatly facilitating the opening and closing of the bags.
In the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a side view of a bag provided with one embodiment of my new and improved closure, the bag being closed. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic horizontal sectional view of the same, the bag being open.
The bag 1 is preferably made of woven fabric but may be made of leather, rubber cloth, or any other suitable material. At its open end, the material of which the bag is made is folded over, preferably on the inner side of the bag, and stitched as at 2 to form a hollow seam 3. The seam is provided at opposite points with two holes 4 on the outside of the bag and with two holes 4 on the inside of the bag.
Two cords 5 and 6 are placed in the hollow seam, one strand of each cord being in the seam at each side of the bag. The two strands of the cord 5 are passed through the outside holes 4 into the seam and at the opposite point of the bag pass out of the seam through the inside holes 4 and in like manner the strands of the cord 6 pass into the seam through the outside holes 4 and out of the seam through the inside holes 4 at the opposite point of the bag. It will thus be seen that the strands of the cord 5 pass through the outside holes 4 adjacent to the inside holes 4 through which the strands of the cord 6 pass and similarly the strands of the cord 6 pass through the outside holes 4 adjacent to the inside holes 4 through which the strands of the cord 5 pass.
The strands of the cord 5 are united outside of the seam at each end by knots 7 and 8, each a short distance from the ends of the strands so as to form stops and tabs or loops 9 and 10 beyond the knots. It will thus be seen that the knot 8 in the cord 5 is on the inside of the bag mouth and the knot 7 in the cord 5 is at the outside of the bag mouth at a point directly opposite. In a like manner the cord 6 has its strands united by knots 11 and 12 forming end tabs or loops 13 and 14.
The knot 11 of the cord 6 is on the inside of the bag mouth and the knot 12 outside of the same. It will also be seen that where one cord has its knot or stop and adjacent loop or tab on the outside of the bag mouth, the other cord has its knot or stop and adjacent tab or loop on the inside of the bag mouth, at the same side or part of the bag and so also at the point directly opposite, on the bag mouth.
Then the bag is closed the two tabs 10 and 13 project from the mouth of the closed bag and if these tabs are seized, the knots 8 and 11 being on the inside of the mouth of the bag they will open the mouth of the bag when these tabs are moved in opposite directions. To close the bag it is only necessary to grasp the tabs 9 and 14 of the two cords and move them from each other whereby the bag is closed.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a bag, having a seam at its mouth and at opposite points of said mouth having openings in the seam at the inside of the mouth and openings at the outside of the mouth, of two cords passed through said seam, each cord having two strands, one of which passes through the seam at one side of the bag mouth and the other through the seam at the opposite side of the bag month, said cords having their strands united at each end outside of the seam, and provided with an extension at each end beyond the points where the two strands are united outside of the seam, to form tabs, each of the cords having the point Where its strands are united; and the Signed at New York city, in the county 7 adjacent tab, at the outside of the bag of New York and State of New York this mouth at one side of the bag, and the other 25 day of October A. D. 1912.
point of uniting the strands and the adja- ELMER C. SHAVER. 5 cent tab at the opposite side of the bag on fitnesses:
the inside of the bag mouth, substantially as HENRY V. PIAGET,
