GREGOR ALEXOVIG, OF GUTTENBERG, NEW JERSEY.
LIFE-BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed March 13, 1914. Serial No. 824,405.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GnEGoR ALnxovIo, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Guttenberg, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life boats.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction of life boat provided with a serviceable means for the prevention of both the capsizing as well as the sinking of the boat and thereby insuring the safety of the occupants thereof.
A further object is to provide an outrigger float construction attachable to the sides of a boat and adjustable for elevating and lowering over the sides thereof.
A still further object is to provide as a life boat attachment, an outrigger float adjust-ably positioned upon the opposite sides of a boat and desirably adjusted with respect to the water and held in such positions for preventing the boat from overturning regardless of the weather conditions or the weight of the boats contents.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a plan view of a life boat provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the. latch-receiving keeper, and, Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a portion of a boat and one side float of a modified form of construction.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have illustrated a life boat 10 constructed after suitable dimensions to render the same as sea-worthy as possible and provided with a keel 11 substantially forming a center board for the boat and being of greater weight and extending to a greater depth than is customary. Suitable brackets 12 are provided upon the opposite gunwales of the boat and have journaled therein power shafts 13, each provided with a pinion 14 rigidly keyed thereto. An inwardly-extending bracket 15 also carried by the gunw al e is positioned adjacent to each of said plnions l4 and has an operating crank 16 journaled therein and having a pinion 17 in constant mesh with the adjacent pinion 14;, and whereby it will be evident that a turning of the crank will revolve the power shaft 13 through the meshing pinions. The construction of floating outrigger now designed comprises the frame work 18 having stretched thereover a plurality of layers of canvas and rubber 19, thereby providing hollow floats substantially kite-shaped in crosssection and capable of maintaining a considerable weight in a floating position upon the water. Rigid braces 20 secured to the frame work of the floats are extended outwardly from the pointed side thereof and are rigidly secured to the shaft 13, said braces being adapted for employment in any desired number to give sufficient strength to the structure and whereby the revolving of the shaft 13 carries with it in an arcuate path, the float which is attached thereto.
From this description, it will be evident that by operating the handle 21 of the crank 16, that the meshing pinions l7 and 14 will be revolved, thereby turning the shaft 13 and imparting movement to the braces 20 to either elevate or lower the float secured thereto.
The adjacent gunwale of the boat is provided with outwardly-extending bifurcated brackets 22 in any desired numbers and adapted to receive between their bifurcations a swinging headed latch 23, and thus maintaining the carrying float in a horizontal position and resting upon the outer extremities of said brackets. Upwardly-extending brackets 24 are provided of similar construction, and these are adapted to receive the latches 25 for securing the float in its upright position as entirely removed from the water. It will thus be seen that the floats are positionable at opposite sides of the main life boat and that operating cranks for each float are positioned at desired points upon the opposite gunwales of the boat and whereby in rough water, the floats may be lowered so as to rest upon or be slightly submer ed in the water, thereby imparting an equilibrium to the boat and maintaining the same against capsizing while moreover as will be float 31 similar in form to that heretofore de scribed and having an inwardly-extending arm 32 constituting a hand lever for shifting the float and journaled upon the shaft 33.
'The lever 32 is provided with a spring pressed dog 3% adapted for engaging the teeth of a rack 85 and whereby it will be evident that the float may be raised or lowered by means of the handle 32 and readily locked at any desired inclination.
j WVhile the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made gwhich will fall withimthe spirit and scope of the invent-ion as claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a boat, of an out- .rigger float consisting of a frame work, a
covering secured to said frame work, rigid braces carried by said frame work and eX- tending outwardly therefrom, a power shaft journaled upon the gunwale of the boat and having said braces secured thereto, means for operating the shaft to adjust the position of tending from the converging edge of said float and rigidly secured to said shaft, bifurcated outwardly and upwardly-extending brackets upon said boat adapted for engagement with said float in its extreme downward and upward position, and means within said boat for revolving said shaft.
3. A device of the class described comprising in combination with a boat having opposite gunwales, of brackets carried by said gunwales, a power shaft journaled in said brackets, pinions secured to said shafts, inwardly projecting brackets upon said boat, cranks journaled within said inwardly-projecting brackets, pinions upon said cranks permanently meshing with said shaft carried pinions, outwardly-extending braces rigidly carried by said shafts, hollow floats kite-shaped in cross-section secured to said braces with their curved sides extending outwardly, bifurcated outwardly and upwardly-extending brackets carried by said boat and adapted for limiting the swinging movement of the floats in opposite direc tions, and latches carried by said floats and adapted for reception within the bifurcations of said brackets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
