ARTHUR J. JONES, OF BROOKLAND, DISTRICT OF CQLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 FREDERICK W. PRATT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GARBAGE AND WASTE REGEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookland, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage and Waste Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in refuse and garbage receptacles and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which may be thoroughly sanitary and having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which c Figure l is a perspective view of a garbage receptacle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3"?) of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a receptacle which may be of any size or shape and which, in the present instance, is provided with laterally projecting lugs B near the bottom thereof and which may be held to a tray C by means of said lugs interlocking with lugs D, struck up from said tray, thus serving as a means for preventing the receptacle from accidentally overturn- 1n The receptacle is provided with a closure, consisting of a band E which is flanged and provided with an elongated curved slot F formed adjacent to the angle of the band. A swinging closing disk H is pivotally mounted upon a pivot H and is provided with a substantially semicircular flange K. A spring N is fastened at one end tothe flanged band and its other end bears against the semicircular band of the disk H and tends to normally hold the latter in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in which Specification of Letters Patent.

the inwardly turned edge of the band will overlap the edge of the disk and thus form a tight joint. A handle 0 projects from the flange of the disk and serves as a convenient means whereby said disk may be swung upon its pivot when it is desired to open the closure. Said band E is bent at an angle at E and has a curved portion E which terminates in an angled end E There are two of said portions E which are in allnement with each other, the angled ends of which are held together by means of a thumb screw T, thus forming a secure means whereby the closure may be held upon the can or receptacle.
By the provision of a refuse and garbage receptacle made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that a simple and eflicient device is afforded which will be thoroughly sanitary, being closed automatically at all times by the provision of the spring-pressed closure, the joints being tight in order to prevent the escape of odors from the receptacle and also affording means for keeping flies and insects from entering the receptacle.
While I have shown my device as attached to a tray for convenience in use in offices and to prevent the receptacle from being aocidentally overturned, still it will be understood that the receptacle may be used in any form or size without the tray, the essence of the invention consisting of the sanitary means for keeping the same closed at all times.
What I claim to be new is 1. In combination with a receptacle, an angled band adapted to be fitted over the open end thereof, a closure pivoted to the band and having a flange extending partially about the circumference thereof, said band having a circumferential slot through which the closure is adapted to move, the closure having an overlapping joint with an inwardly projecting portion of the band, a spring fastened to said band at one end and its other end bearing freely against the flange of the closure, and a handle projecting from said closure, as set forth.
2. In combination with a receptacle, an angled band adapted to be fitted over the open end thereof and having an offset with portions terminating in angled ends, means for fastening said angled ends together to hold the band frictionally in engagement With a receptacle, a closure pivoted to the ing freely againstthe end of the closure, as 10 band and having a flange extending parset forth,
tially about the circumference thereof and In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my having a handle, said band having a circumsignature in the presence of two Witnesses. ferential slot through Which the closure is Y ARTHUR J JONES adapted to move, the latter having an over lapping joint with an inwardly projecting Witnesses:
portion of the band, a spring fastened to A. L. HoUGH, said band at one end and its other 'end bear- B. W. CRAMER.
