NURSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented Aug. 11, 191%.
Application filed June 11 1913. Serial No. 772,937.
and pertains more particularly to the construction of the mouth of the food-cell and the nursing nip le attached thereto.
The object o my invention is to produce a nursing device comprising a food-cell and -a flexible and elastic nipple therefor in which the nipple is secured upon the'interior of the mouth of the cell by a flexible and elastic flange on the base of the nipple.
A further object thereof is to produce a nursing device in which the nipple has a contacting surface upon both sides of the food-cell and a consequent greater support for its flexible structure.
Another object of my invention isto provide a food cell having a seat within its mouth and a flexible nipple seated thereon and secured in dilated form therein.
A still further object thereof is to produce a nursing device in which the flexible nursing-nipple is supported against expanding and contracting at its point of engagement with the food-cell to prevent displacement and the collapse of the breast and nipple of the flexible structure, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and eflicient device of said character than has heretofore been accomplished.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention showing thev parts assembled for use; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the nursing nip le detached and ready to be adjusted upon t e food cell, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of n my invention showing a food cell of reduced diameter, and an outer case for same.
Referrmg now to the drawings, 1 lndlcates a food cell preferably of cylindrical form,
having an outwardly extending annular flange 2 around its mouth. A short distance" beneath the outer edge of the mouth of the cell and upon the interior wall thereof, is provided an annular shoulder 3 forming the inforce the structure and prevent its colapse in use. The base of said breast is adapted to fit within the mouth of the cell and rest upon' the seat 4 formed by the shoulder 3. As shown in the drawings, the nipple is held in such position by the flexible and elastic annular flange 9 surrounding the base of the breast. Said flange forms a nor mally upstanding collar of substantially the same diameter and circumference as the base of the breast," and is provided with an an-- nular ring or thickened portion 10 about its outer edge. When the nipple is adjusted in the neck of the cell and seated upon the shoulder 3, the flange 9 is adapted to be pressed downwardly to embrace and encompass the flange 2 on the cell while the ring 10 thereof lodges beneath same to secure the nipple in operative position.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the wall of the lower portion of the cylindrical food cell 1 is formed of thin metal or other suitable material, which adjacent to its mouth is expandedto form the shoulder '11 and the seat 12 on the interior, and the annular shoulder 13 on the outside thereof, and terminates in the annular flange l4 surrounding its mouth.
It will be appreciated that the relatively reduced diameter of the cell will be convenient for holding by infants, and will, if preferred,'permit the use of the outer case; 15, which may be telescoped upon the cell and its upper end form a flush surface with the shoulder 13 on the cell.
From the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that the breast of the nursing nipple is supported upon the interior of the mouth of "the food cell and rests upon the seat 4; that it is held in position against spreading by the wall of the cell, and against contracting by the flange 9 embracing the mouth of the bottle; that the wall of the cell tends to support the breast against collapse, which is augmented by the reinforcing thickened portion of the breast adjacent to its base; that the flexible flange 9 and the ring 10 securely hold the nipple in position on the cell, and it will be further appreciated that the parts and combinations of my device may be varied within a wide range;
within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A nursing device comprising a food cell having a mouth, an outwardly-extending annular flange about the edge of the month, anannular shoulder within the mouth of the cell, a flexible nursing nipple seated on said shoulder, and an annular flexible and elastic flange on the base of said 'nipple adapted to embrace the flange on the edge of the cell.
2. A nursing device, comprising a food cell having a month, an outwardly extending annular flange about the edge of the month, an annular shoulder within the mouth of the cell, a flexible nursing nipple seated on said shoulder, and an annular flexible and elastic flange on the base of the nipple and a thickened ring upon the edge of said flange adapted to embrace the ange on the edge of the cell.
