Description

D. G. STANION.
CARRIER.
APPLICATION nun our. 2'1, 1913.

avwcntoz ash human Mud w S. kg Q33 cm vfM- Qmmuq 1). minus STANION, or SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA. r
' oannmia.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, D. CURTIs STANIYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers,.
of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relatestonew anduseful improvements in carriers and more particularly to acombinedbasket and cradle the object oftlie invention being to provide a device of the above character whichis especially adaptedfor use in supporting and carrying infants and when set up, can be readily used as a sleeping cradle. I Another object of the invention is to provide a deviceof:this character which will possess advantages in. points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simplein con;
struction and operation.
With the above and other objects in;view,
this invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance'with my invention; F ig.- 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3is a fragmental side elevation; Fig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view taken through the oval portion of the side member; Fig. 5 is a similar view taken through the circular portion of the side member.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame indicated by the numeral 1 and which is preferably constructed of heavy wire or rods integrally connected to form the longitudinal side members 2 and the end members 3. Suspended from the side pieces 2 and the transverse end pieces 3 is the supporting body 4 which is preferably formed of canvas or any other like material of suitable weight, the upper edge of which is lapped over the frame 1 and secured by stitching, as shown at 5, any other suitable means being employed, if desired.
In carrying the body or basket from place to place, or supporting the same in spaced relation with the floor, I provide the handle members 6 which are preferably U-shaped in Specification of Letters Patent, j l Patented Sept, 29,1914. Application filed October 27,. 1913., Serial No. 797,619.
construction and provided at their ends with the eyes 7, said eyes being preferably oval shaped in design, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. Theeyes 7 are slidablyand rotatably mounted within the reduced portions irnns'rarns PATENT OFFICE. y
8 of the longitudinal side members 2. The
reduced portions 8,1asillustrated in the drawings. are substantially circular in cross sectlon at oneend thereof, while the other end thereof is preferably oval in shape to conform tothe shape of the eyes. .Itwill be noted from i the drawings that the intermediate portions of the U-shaped members 6 are to be used as handles when conveying the basket from place to place and when it is desired to use the same as a cradle, these members will form the supporting legs which-suspend the body above the floor or .othersurfaceupon which the same is resting. It will be readily understood from the above, description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that in using the device as a basketforconveying an in- ..fant, from place to place, the eyes 7 are moved laterally upon'the side portions 2 until they are arranged at the circular end of the reduced portions 8, thus permitting the -U-shaped members to be swung upwardlyandsuspended in any desirable positionabove the bodyofthe basket. When it is desired to use the .deviceas a cradle, the handlesare swung downwardly to a vertical position below the bodyand the eyes 7 moved longitudinally upon the side members 2 until saideyes are engaged over the oval shaped portions 9, thus preventing any rotary movement of the eyes upon the side portions which will securely hold the U.
shaped members in an upright position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have pro vided a simple and durable carrier which is especially adapted for use in conveying. infants from one place to another or the same can be readily used as a cradle, when desired. It will also be apparent that the device is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changesin the details of construction and in themproportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
It will be readily understood that the eyes 7 of the handle members 6 may be electrically welded to the frame if so desired or a lock. may be electrically welded upon the frame b ar, if so desired. 7 It will also be apparent that the oval portions which are arranged adjacent the reduced portions 8 may be eliminated at one end of the handle members, -as clearly illustrated in the drawings or they may be used at both ends, if desired.
What I claim is 1. Adevice of the class described including a substantially rectangular frame, a flexible body having its upper edge secured to the'frame, LLshaped members having certain of their ends formed oval in shape and rotatablymountedupon the side portions of the frame, whereby they may be disposed above or beneath the frame, and means coacting with said oval-shaped ends for retaining. said U-shaped members against movement, when disposed beneath the frame. Y '2. A device of the class described includmg a substantially rectangular frame, a
flexible body suspended from the frame,
the side members of said frame being provided With reduced portions, said reduced portions being circular in form at one end and oval in form at the other end, U-shaped members having oval shaped eyes formed on certain of their ends and mounted within said reduced portions, said eyes being arranged upon the circular portions when moving said U-shaped members and said eyes being arranged upon the oval portions to retain the U-shaped members against movement.
3. A device of the class described including a substantially rectangular frame, a flexible body suspended therefrom, the side members of said frame having reduced portions, said reduced portions being provided with a circular and an oval portion, U- shaped members having oval shaped eyes formed at the ends thereof, which are mounted upon the reduced portions, said eyes being arranged upon the circular portion when actuating the handle and adapted to be arranged upon the oval portion to retain the U-shaped members in their operative position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of witnesses.
