Description

E. P. KENDALL. BAG DEFLEOTOR. nrmoumn FILED DEO.8,1913.
1,1 12,914. Patented 001;. 6, 1914.
..................... idzmmfllfmdall,
Inventor Witne ses Q I Attorneys EDWARD P. KENDALL, OF BOWDOINHAM, MAINE.
BAG-DEFLECTOR.
I Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 8, 1913.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914. Serial No. 805,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowdoinham, in the county of Sagadohoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Bag-Deflector, of which the following is a specification.
he present invention appertains to a bag deflector for use in connection with a bag holder and filling hopper, such as is disclosed in my former Patent, No. 973,355, issued October 18, 1910.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel or unique bag deflector adapted to be set below the bag holder and filling hopper, whereby when the bag is filled and released, the same will be deflected onto the floor and to one side, from whence, the filled bag may be conveniently trucked away.
With the foregoing general objects outlined, and with other objects in view, which will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings wherein igure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the deflector applied to the platform of a scales, below the bag holder and filling hopper. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the deflector. Fig. 3 is an elevation of another form of bag deflector as in use. Fig. 4 is a rear View of the second form of deflector.
Referring specifically to Figs. 1 and 2, the deflecting device embodies a sheet metal or hollow body 1, having one side inclined as at 2, to provide a deflecting surface or plate at one end of the base or bottom of the body 1. The base or bottom of the body 1 is adapted to beset upon the platform of a scales S with the inclined deflecting surface or chute 2 below the bag holder and filling hopper H disposed above the platform, as seen in Fig. 1, it being understood that the deflecting device may be employed with various bag holders and filling hoppers, al-
side of the scale platform,
though it is desirable to employ the bag holder disclosed in the above mentioned patent.
The body 1 is provided with a rearwardly extending projection 3 or bottom, and opposite the inclined surface or plate 2, and a suitable weight 4 is disposed within the extension 3.
The weight 4 is such, as to overcome the lostweight of the filled bag, due to the bag restlng against the inclined plate or deflector 2, which will create a lateral thrust upon the scale platform. In this manner, the weight 4 counterbalances the lateral thrust created by the filled bag of predetermined weight resting against the inclined plate or deflector 2, in order that the bag and its contents may be properly weighed by the scales. The value of this feature will be more manifest, when it is understood that various weights may be provided according to the weights of the filled bags, it being understood that the bag holder and filling device H may be set or adjusted for filling the bags with a predetermined amount of material, as is fully disclosed in the patent referred to. Thus, if the filled bag weighs fifty pounds, the weight 4 would be a fraction of that amount, while if the filled bag weighed one hundred pounds, the weight 4 would necessarily have to be of increased proportions accordingly.
In use, after the bag has been applied to the holder and filled, the bag being released will slide down the inclined plate or deflector 2, to the floor, at one side of the scale platform, which is highly desirable. In this manner, it is not necessary to lift the filled bag off of the scale platform, and furthermore, the inclined plate or deflector 2 will support the bag in an inclined position after the bag has been released. The bag may then be sewed shut, and trucked away.
The present deflecting device is therefore of considerable advantage, inasmuch as it reduces the labor and time ordinarily consumed in handling the filled bags from the scale platform.
Another feature of the present device, resides in the fact that the inclined plate or deflector 2 will deflect any material to one should the filling hopper leak or overrun, in order that the waste material will not accumulate on the platform of the scales, as would be objectionable.
In the modified form illustrated Figs. 3 and 4, the deflecting device embodies the sheet metal base 1 having an inclined deflecting plate 2 bent upwardly from one edge, the deflecting plate 2 having the deflexed side flanges 3, and the lower ends of the flanges 3' being bent inwardly and riveted upon the base plate 1 to support the deflecting plate 2 in position. The upper end of the deflecting plate 2 is defleXed as at 5, and the upper ends of the flanges 3 are bent inwardly and riveted to the deflected portion or lip 5. Thus, the modified structure is rigid or substantial, the base plate 1 being readily set upon the floor below the bag holder and the filler H, as seen in Fig. 3, whereby the deflecting plate 2 will carry out the results above noted.
