UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

FAUCET-ADAPTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13,1914.
Application filed October 27, 1913. Serial No. 797,416. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW F. BAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of vVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucet- Adapters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device whereby a pipe and hose connection may be readily made to widely different types of faucets.
Faucets in common use are some of them provided .with a threaded end, being known as hose bibs and are intended for attachment to the interiorly threaded ends ofpipe and hose couplings, but other faucets have a smooth end and are not suitedfor such use. Of these'smooth end faucets there are found in the same building many different styles such as the kitchen sink faucet, the double hot and cold water faucet for the bath room, etc. It frequently happensthat one wishes to attach a pipe or hose to these different faucets as for a shower bath fixture, for water motors, for hydraulic suction devices and the like and it is to adapt a threaded pipe coupling for ready attachment interchangeably to any of the different types of faucets found on the premises that this invention is intended.
The invention resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which make for interchangeable eficiency, which features of novelty characterizing the invention areparticularized in the claims annexed to and forming a part of the specification. understanding of the invention, however, and the, advantages thereof reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and the descriptive matter based thereon wherein are set forth by way of illustration only a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary kitchen sink faucet with the adapter attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the device in the position shown but disassociated from the faucet; Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the elements of the device; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 5; and v For the better Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the adapter attached to a hot and cold Water bath faucet.
The adapter comprises the body portion 11, having in its upper face a seat provided with a resilient packing 12 for the reception of the end of the spout 13 of the faucet 14, having reference more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2. The body portion of the adapter has formed at each side thereof apertured ears 1.5 through which extend the threaded shanks 16. of hook members 17 which shanks have threaded thereon knurled nuts 18, adapted to bear upon the under faces of the ears 15. I The shanks 16-may be formed as integral parts of the hooks 17 "but as shown and for convenience in manufacture the upper portion of each shank extends through the angular end 19 of the hook 17 and is rigidly secured to the hook above such angular lip bythe rivet 20.
A link member having the form of a yoke is pivoted by its two legs 21, 21 upon the rivet 20 and has its crossbar 22 provided with a notch 23 and with apertures 24, 24. A loop member 25 has two substantially parallel threaded stems 26, 26 which extend through the apertures 24, 24 and are equipped with nuts 27 27 which bear against one face of the cross bar 22.
The body. of the adapter 11 is provided with a lower threaded extension 28 adapted to receive either directly or indirectly by means of a threaded coupling a pipe 29, using the'term in a generic sense to include as well a flexible hose.
When it is desired to connect a pipe by means of the adapter with a faucet ofthe type shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the loop memwith the notch 23 of the cross bar 22 resting upon the upper face of the spout and the knurled nuts 18 are then screwed home forcing the elastic seat 12 firmly against the end of the spout 13 so as to make a fluid tight joint. In order to effect a proper adjustment of the adapter to faucets of differ ent size the nuts, 27, 27 will be adjusted upon the threaded stems 26, 26 so as to shorten or lengthen the loop member 25.
If it is desired to make the connectionwith a double faucet of the type shown in Fig. 7 the hooks 17, 17 are engaged over the two lateral extensions 31, 31 of the fauceti32 and the knurled nuts 18, 18 are screwed home as before drawing the elastic seat 12 of the adapter firmly against the open end of the faucet spout 33 to efiect a fluid tight joint.
It will be readily understood that the adapter by reason of the particular arrangement and shape of its parts may be employed to advantage in connection with faucets of widely different type including faucets of styles different. from those shown herein by way of illustration and that by the use of the adapter it is rendered possible to effect a coupling between a pipe and a great variety of faucets on the premises, this being of particular importance in connection with the employment of Water motors or of hydraulic suction devices for use With vacuumcleaners and the like. It Will also be understood that the details of construction and arrangement are subject to considerable modification without departure from the essence of the invention or the sacrifice of its material advantages.
I claim:
1. A faucet adapter comprising a body having a seat for a faucet spout and a pipe engaging nipple, a pair of faucet engaging hook members eachhaving a shank adjustably connected to the body, and a loop member also adjustably connected to the body and arrangedv to-assume a position at an angle to the axis of thehook members, substantially as described.
2. A faucet adapter comprising a body having a seat for a faucet spout and a pipe engaging nipple, a pair of faucet engaging hook members each having a shank adjustably connected to the body, a link member pivoted to thehook member, and a loop member adjustably connected to the link and extending at. an angle to said link member, substantially as described.
3. A faucet adapter comprising a body having a seat for a faucet spout and a pipe engaging nipple, a pair of faucet engaging hook members each having a threaded shank extending through anaperture in the body, a nut threaded on each shank and adapted to bear against the body, a link member pive otally attached to the hook members, and a faucet engaging loop member having threaded 'stems passing through apertures of the link and extending at substantially right angles to the link, and a nut threaded on each of the stems and bearing on the link, substantially as described.
i. A faucet adapter comprising a body having a seat for a faucet spout and a pipe engaging nipple and provided with apertured cars, a pair of faucet engaging hook members each having a threaded shank extending through one of the apertured cars, a nut threaded on each shank and adapted to bear against the ear, a link member comprising a yoke pivotally attached by its legs to the hooks, a faucet engaging loop member having threaded stems passing through apertures of the yoke and extending trans versely of the plane of the yoke, and a nut threaded on each of the stems and bearing on a yoke, substantially as described.
5. A faucet adapter comprising a body having a seat for a faucet spout and a pipe engaging nipple and provided with apertured cars, a pair of faucet engaging hook members each having a threaded shank extending through one of the apertured cars, a nut threaded on each shank and adapted to bear against the ear, a link member C0111- prising a yoke pivotally attached by its legs to the hooks and having its cross bar provided with a spout engaging notch, a faucet engaging loop having threaded stems passing through apertures of the cross bar and extending transversely of the plane of the yoke, and a nut threaded on each of the stems and bearing on the yoke cross bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MATHEW F. BAYER.
