Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Oct. 20, 1914..
Application filed Apri130, 1914. Serial No. 835,448.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. .CooIIn- NOUR, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Applicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for applying a dry powder medicament to the vagina. I
In the treatment ofvarious diseases difficulty is experiencedin satisfactorily applying medicaments. If applied in solution, the treatment is only transitory, and although the same can be applied by means of tampons, these are factory-prepared with standard remedies and the medication cannot be readily varied to meet the require ments of any particular patient, or to suit changing stagesof the disease under treatment. If medication can be conveniently applied in the form of a dry powder, the same may be varied to suit anyrequirement and may be modified if found necessary, by compounding it with any inert or bland medium and the same remains more directly in contact with the affected parts.
It is for this purpose that the invention, which is the subject of this application, has been devised.
It comprises the combination with a suitable vaginal dilator of an air tube delivering axially through it, which air tube delivers through a small closed receptacle in which the medicated powder may be placed.
On air being blown through the tube the,
powder is taken up by, it and is delivered in a finely diffused state to the dilated wall of the vagina.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Figure 1 shows the device complete, two members of the dilator being removed to show the diffusing tip of the air tube, and the powder receptacle being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a part view showing the dilator extended, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the dilator closed.
In these drawings 2 represents a small powder holding receptacle which is closable with a cap or plug 3. Into this receptacle 2 a small rubber tube 5 delivers which tube has a mouthpiece 6 at its other end.
Directly opposite to theinlet 1 of this tube 5 is an outlet pipe 7 forming a tubular stem and having a removable diffusing tip 10,
and adjacent to this tip a conical enlargement 9.
Axially slidable on the tubular stem 7 is a sleeve-like member 11 of non-absorbent heat-non-conducting material, such as vulcanite, on the outer end of which a number of dilating members 12 are pivoted. Each of these dilating members forms a quadrant of the cross section of the sleeve member 11 so that when closed they form a uniform prolongation of the sleeve the ends being rounded as shown. The central corner of each member 12 is removed at 1.3 to afford room for the conical enlargement 9 of the central stem, which removedportion tapers inward toward the pivotal connection, as
at 14:. Against these inclined inner sides 14 the conical enlargement 9 may bedrawn by endwise movement of the sleeve 11 on drawing the stem 7 outward. In the drawing'the tubular stem 7 is shown as threaded,
' on which threaded stem is a nut 15which 9 will expand the dilator members and will retain them in any desired position of expansion.
The powder being blown through the tube by air from the mouth of the patient,
the air is not only warm but the hands are free toretain the device in position.
I do not desire to be confined to the particular form of dilator shown and described as the essential feature of the device can be applied to any suitable dilator.
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be-protected in by Letters Patent, is: I
A dry powder vaginal applicator, comprising. the combination with a powder holdlng receptacle havingvan inlet and an outlet aperture, a mouthpiece connected by the stem 7 and by that enlargement the dilating members 12 are radially expanded a flexible tube to the inlet aperture, a substantiallyrigid tubular stem connected to the outlet aperture said stem having a removable contracted tip and a conical enlargement adjacent thereto, a substantially parallel sleeve slidably mounted on the tubular stem between the enlargement and the receptacle, said sleeve having dilator 1nen1- berspivotally mounted 011 the outer end, said dilator members folding over the tubular stem and forming when so folded a uniform prolongation of the sleeve, the inner edges of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Putnam, Washington. D. C."
