ANKLE-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
innea- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isioonn Sorrosirnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ankle-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an ankle supporting device which is especially adapted for children, and can be worn with any ordinary shoe.
The device is designed to fit the heel portion of the foot, and to embrace the ankle portions of the leg thereby preventing displacement and holding the ankle in proper position.
The supporter consists of a heel piece or leather sole to which is fastened the upper or corset.
The invention particularly refers to the means whereby the corset or upper is stitched to the upper portion of the heel piece, so as to leave the interior unobstructed and the bottom of the sole free from impediments. In this construction the supporter will fit snugly to the foot and the bottom of the heel piece being entirely smooth will not be liable to bulge and form ridges in places to irritate the heel of the wearer.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the supporter. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken along a line :0 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken along the line y y of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of the forward portion of the shank.
In this drawing the letter a denotes a flexible leather sole or heel piece which is suitably shaped as shown wit the heel portion of a foot. To this sole is secured at b a U shaped corset consisting of an outer cover 0 preferably of canvas, and a lining cl of thin pliable leather. Between these two layers of material are located a series of flexible stiffening strips 6 which extend from the top of the sole to the upper portion of the corset. The strips are held in their vertical position by stitches f Specification of Letters Patent.

formed between the parallel rows of strips. The lower forward portion of the sole is beveled as indicated at 9 so that the forward edge of the sole will offer a smooth surface to the heel of the foot and practically when inserted in the shoe the edge forms a plane surface with the insole of the shoe. The two layers of material are secured together by stitchingadjacent to the edges of the corset as indicated at h.
The peculiar method of fastening the corset to the heel piece by bending and turning the ends outwardly along the top of the heel piece and then stitching the turned over portion to the heel piece, avoids any obstruction in the interior of the device and gives a perfectly smooth surface without any edges to contact with the foot. Also as a result of fastening the corset in the manner described the bottom of the shank piece is smooth, hence when the supporter is inserted in the shoe the lower surface of the heel piece sets into close contact with the insole of the shoe thus preventing wrinkling or creasing of the heel piece and consequent injury to the foot.
The supporter can be made of any size and the corset is open at its forward portion so that it can be readily slipped on to the foot with the side flaps thereof hugging the ankle portion and supporting the foot.
It should be stated that each layer of material forming the corset consists of a single piece of material so as to avoid any protruding edges on the interior or exterior of the corset.
I claim:
An ankle supporting device of the kind described, comprising a heel piece having,
its lower forward portion beveled, and a corset consisting of two layers of flexible material having interposed stiil'ener strips terminating at the top of the heel piece, the lower edges of the material being turned outwardly and stitched along the top edge portion of the heel piece.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
