FILM-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application filed October 7, 1913. Serial No. 793,835.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT S. GRIFFEY and BURTON STEINI-IAUSER, citizens of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Film-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to receptacles for holding the idle reels of films in the operating-rooms of moving-picture theaters, and the like, and the primary object is to provide a novel, simple and convenient structure, which will preserve the reels, so that they are readily accessible, and will permit the same being separated and transported.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of two of the cases in assembled relation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of said cases. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, a portion being broken away to illustrate the interior arrangement.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The structure preferably comprises a series of separable units, each designed to hold a single reel, and each unit is in the form of a case of sheet metal having side walls 41, a top wall 5, a bottom wall 6, and a rear wall 7, leaving an open front, which is closed by a swinging door 8. The bottom 6 inclines downwardly and forwardly, and beneath the same is formed a reservoir or receptacle 9 for holding glycerin, or analogous material. This bottom is perforated, as illustrated at 10 to afford communication between the interior of the case and the interior of the said receptacle or reservoir.
The rear wall 7 projects beyond the sides and top, forming a flange 11, the upper part of which is provided with key-hole openings 12 that are designed to receive supporting hooks, nails or other devices, whereby the structure can be suspended from a wall. The front portion of the case is also provided with an outstanding flange 13. The
two flanges 11 and 13 on one side of the case are provided with key-hole openings 14, and on the opposite side, are provided with correspondingly arranged headed studs 15. Each case furthermore has a handle bail 16,
suitably secured to the side walls 4 between the flanges. For the purpose of securing the doors 8 in closed position, each case has slidably mounted on the rear side of the flange 13, a vertically disposed rod 17, the same being engaged in ears 18, and this rod is provided with a keeper hook 19 that an opening formed in the flange. The door 8 has an car 20 provided with an opening 21, and the keeper hook 19 is arranged to pass through the opening 21 and engage over the lower edge thereof. A spring 22, surrounding the rod and bearing against the uppermost ear 18, also bears against the collar 23 on the rod, and serves to urge the same downwardly, so as to insure the lock- 111g action of the keeper hook 19. The lower end of the rod is preferably provided with an operating head 24:.
One or more of the cases may be employed as desired. If a number are used, the studs 15 of one are engaged in the key-hole openings 14 of the next adjacent, and they are thus locked together. They can be supported or suspended from a wall, as already explained. If it is desired to obtain a reel of film from one of the cases, it is only nec essary to press upwardly upon the head 24 of the locking rod 17, whereupon the hook 19 will be disengaged from the ear 20 and the door will then be opened and the reel will roll out, because of the inclined disposition of the bottom 6, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. It will alsobe evident that each individual case may be detached from its neighbor and it with the reel therein individually transported.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A case of the character set forth, comprising top, bottom, rear and side walls, the bottom wall being disposed in a forward and downward inclination and extending at such inclination to the front edge to cause passes through a reel placed therein to be automatically discharged from the case, an outwardly swinging door for entirely closing the front of the case andconstituting means forretaining the reel therein, and means normally locking the door against its outward movement to hold the reel in its case.
2. A case of the character set forth, comprising inclosing walls and an open front, an outstanding flange located alongside the open front, a door mounted on the case for closing the open front, and means mounted on the'ext'e'rior of the case behind the flange for securing the door in closed position, said flange having means for attaching it to the flange of a corresponding case.
3. A reel-holding structure of the char- Copies of this patent may be obteines for engage in the key-hole openings of the flanges of the adjacent case.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
