UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. ALLEN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN MULTI- GBAI'H COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ADDRESS-PLATE.
Application filed September 22, 1913.
To all whom. it ma 3 concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM R. Annsx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Im n'ovement in Address-Plates, of which the ollowin is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanyin drawings.
The object of his invention is to provide a chea and effective address plate consisting a holder and line slugs mounted therein. The line slu s carrying the items of the address may 0 cast or otherwise formed with a head portion and a longitudinal shank; the holder comprises a plate of suitable material having slots throu h which the shanks of the slugs proicct. '1 1e slots are rovided with suitab e lateral notches, an the shanks having corresponding lugs adapted to pass through sac enlargements, tie longitudinal sln ting of the slug relative to the plate after such passage holding the sin to the plate. Slutabe means are provi ed to prevent the slugs becoming displaced when in their locked position.
The invention is hereinafter more fully explained and its essential characteristics are set out in the claims.
In the drawings, holder alone; Iig. 2 is an enlarged )ers icctive section of one of the line sags alone; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of such slug:
-' Fi 4 is a cross section of the address plate:
ant Fig. 5 is a plan of the address date.
Referring to Figs. 1, 4 and 5, represents the holder for the slugs. This he der is a plate of comparatively thin material and may conveniently be made of metal. Extending longitudinally of this plate are a plurality of nrrallel sided slotsn, three being shown. l'ormed in the opposite edges of each slot are notches a, the notches of one slot bein preferably staggered with reference to those of the adjacent slot.
ll, in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive, indicates the line slugs. They referably consist of solid metal cast mem ers having longitudinal shanks b with a laterally extending T- head I). On opposite sides of the shank near the lower edge thereof are lugs b. The shank I) is eli htly narrower than any of the slots a, and the lugs I) are slightly smaller than the notches a. l' find it con- Spcciflcatlon of Letters Patent.

venient to make these lugs of a rounded or semi-cylindrical form and to shape the notches accordingly. The space between the DDR3! faces of the lugs and the lower face 0 the T head is slightly larger than the thickness of the plate A. Such slug as described is mounted in the plate A by being placed with the lugs 11* in registration with any of the notches a when the shank is pressed into the slot to bring the lugs on the lower side of. the plate, after which the slug is slid longitudlnally approximately half the distance between adjacent notches a. This brings the lugs I) beneath solid smces of the plate. When the slug is in p ace, it is held against longitudinal shiftmg by any suitable means, as, for example, spring clips 0 sprung into the slots and frictionally engaging the walls thereof and abuttin the ends of the slug. Such clips may, if dcsired, be of the form shown in Patent No. 1,031,447, granted to The American Multigraph Company as assignee of Ferdinand I-lohenberger.
My address plate may receive the print ing pressure on the shoulders I) of the slugs and thence through the plate to a suitable support, or the slugs may stand on their own feet and the plate be simply to retain them in position. The lower faces of the lugs b are preferably flush with the bottom of the shank b, as shown in Fig. 3, so that there is a base of sullicient size to conveniently support the slug, if it is desired to have it stand on its own bottom. It is important that the slug stand accurately the desired height-to paper, and, to avoid the expense of accurate machine work, I prcl'cr to have it stand on an original cast surface: that is to say, if it stands on its own bottom such bottom is in an original cast. plane and the groove prmided by the head and the lugs may be made in any convenient manner, by casting, or machining. or part casting and part machining. ()n the other hand, if the printing surface is received by the head of the slu onto the plate. then the under face of the liead is n'eferahly an original cast surface and the lower portion of the slug may be formed in any convcnient manner.
The various notches a in the plate and the lugs 71" of the slug are both spaced cl nidistant so that the slug may be presenter to various parts of the slot and have its lugs ill) pass through notches. By rounding the lugs and making the notches of corresponding shape, the plate may be conveniently punched. By staggering the notches of one slot with reference to the next, the slots may be brought as close together as desired without unduly weakenin the plate.
llavinq thus deseribet my invention. what I CIllllll is:
l. The combination of a plate having a plurality of )arallei slots, said slots being provided witi lateral notches, the notches of one slot being staggered with relation to those of the adjacent slot, and slugs having shanks adapted to occupy the slots and provided with lugs adapted to pass through the notches and thereafter stand opposite portions of the plate between notches.
2. The combination of a plate having a plurality of parallel slots through it,
tween notches, and means for preventing the slugs in this position from shifting longitudinally.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
