' Letters Patent No. 112,542, dated March 14, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN POWDER-FLASKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of maritime.
To all whom it may concern y Be it known "that we, JOSEPH T. GAPnwnLn andGEoRen D. CAPEWELL, of Woodbury,"in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Powder-Flask; andwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereot', which'will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure ;1 represents a side view, partly insection', of our new powder-flask.
Figure 2 is adetailsectionj of the cap or covering Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i I
This invention relates the new construction of caps or covers for powder-flasks; with the object of reducing the expense of making the same; also, to a new manner of attaching said caps, so that they can be removed forfilling the 'flasks."
The invention consists, first, in making the aforesaid cap or cover, which has a downward-projecting rim or flange for fitting over the end of the flask, and an upward-projecting socket for receiving the measuring-tube, inone piece with said flange and socket by stam ping it out Of a flat plate. The construction of the cap istherehy considerably simplified and reduced in expense.
The invention also consists in the combination of the cap orcbver aforesaid, when the same has L- shaped slots in its flange or rim, with a screw on the flask, which screw serves as a fastening for the cap,
V allowing the removal of the same.
A in the drawing represents the upper portion of a powder-flask of suitable construction;
. Bis the cover or cap of the same.
This, over 'or cap is made in the form of a hatch-- cnlar plate, with I downward-projecting flange a, which "fitsover the neck or upper part of the flask, and with an aperture, 1), and surrounding upward-projecting tubeor socket c, which serves as a support for the measuring-tube O. a
We construct the cap B, with the flange a and tube 0, in one piece, bystamping it from a flat plate into the form shown. I
Such caps are at present made from cast metal, in
the form shown in fig. 2.
The rim d is of necessity soldered or secured to the improvement.
Greater accuracy as to the shape of rim and a consequent better tit on the flask are also obtained by our invention.
The rim a of the cap has two or more L-s'haped slots, c, which extend to its lower edge, and which, by fitting over pins, f, that project from the flask, allow the attachment and removal of' the'cap.
One of the pins f is made in form of a screw, and serves, when drawn with its head against the rim, to firmly secure the cap to the flask, obviating all danger of spontaneous detachment.
By this means the cap can be securely attached to the flask, but may be taken off when it is desired to remove the cap.
Heretofore the caps were secured by rivets, or otherwise, irremovably tothe flask.
\Ve 'are aware that the joint or fastening of caps or covers by means of L-shaped slots and projecting,
pins has already been used for various purposes. We
therefore claim it not, believing this part of our inventionto consist in the combination of said fastening with the screw f, for clamping the cap.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The cap or cover for a powder-flask, composed of a plate, flange, and tube, all made iu'one piece by stamping, substantially as herein showman'ddescribed.
:3. The rim a, having slots 0, combined, as described,
with the pins f, projecting from the flask, one of said \Vitn esses Harms Bo'rsrom), James R. THOMAS.
