HE NORRIS PETERS 60.. PHOTOLITHQ. WASHINGTON. D. C.
JAKOB SPYCI-IALSKI, or scorn BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHIP-TABLE.
Application filed September 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, Janos SrYoHALsKI, subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ship-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ship tables.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a table especially adapted for use upon shipboard and so arranged that its top will remain horizontally positioned regardless of the rolling and other movements of the ship. ,7
A further object is to provide a table which may be of any desired dimensions and cmployable for such purposes as eating or playing games, and constructed with a balancing counterweight for maintaining the equilibrium of the table top.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which likedesignating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a vertical central sectional view of the device with a portion of the table top in edge elevation. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the supporting spider detached. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the socket member detached, and Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the said socket member.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, thetable top 10 is illustrated as having the spider 11 secured centrally therebeneath by means of screws 12 extending through the perforations 13 in the four arms 14; of the spider and engaging the underside-of the table top.
A supporting base 15 consists of a plurality of legs 16 downwardly divergent and having a connecting brace 17 secured be- Speeification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915. Serial No. 863,515.
tween their inner sides. A bracket 18 is secured. by bolts 19 to the top 20 of the base and has a socket member 21 of the form lllustrated in Figs. 3 and A secured to the base by means of the said bolts 19 extendlng through the perforations 22 of its radial arms 23.
A rod 24 has its upper end removably positioned within the central socket 25 of a depending boss of the spider 11 and is retained therein by a set screw 27. A universal journaling ball 28 is screw-threaded to the upper portion of the rod 24 slightly beneath the boss 26 and is formed spherical with the exception of its upper portion which is cut away forming a top face 29.
The ball 28 is adapted to seat within the socket 30 of the socket member 21 with the rod 24: depending through the circular bottom opening 31 of the said members while a counter-balance weight 32 is screw-threaded upon the lower end of the said rod and serves to maintain the rod 24 vertically positioned. A screw 35 extends through the socket member 21 and enters a socket 36 of the ball 28, when desired to hold the table top stationary.
With this detailed description of the device, its complete operation will be apparent in that the positioning of the ball 28 within the socket 30 forms a universal joint and whereby the weight 32 when maintaining the rod 28 vertical, normally positions the table top 12 horizontally regardless of the inclinations of the base 15.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claim.
What I claim as new is A self-leveling table comprising a supporting base, a socket member associated with said base, said socket member formed of a single piece of sheet metal embodying a ball seat, horizontal radial arms projecting outwardly from said member, means for securing the radial arms to said base, a ball mounted in said seat, a rod supported by said ball, a table top carried by the upper In testimony whereof I affix my signature end of said rod, a counter-balanced Weight in presence of two Witnesses.
carried b the lower end of said rod a recess for zned in the side Wall of the bell, JAKOB SPYCHALSKI' and a screw carried by said seat adapted to Witnesses:
be received 'in'said recess and engage the Grno. J. ZBOYOVSKY,
ball. GEORGE ZBOYOVSKY.
