To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, AUGUST F. ALTHEIDE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means whereby variable speeds can apply to the grinding rolls while the roller mill is in operation.
Another object is to provide improved means whereby the grinding rollers can be revolved at the desired different speeds and thereby be held against running at a uniform speed by reason of the friction created between the rollers while the cereal is passing through.
Another object of this invention is in being able to apply a variable speed to the grinding rollers while the machine is in motion, sothat the eXact condition of grains can be readily met with the proper ratio of speed applied to the grinding rollers. Y
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of what is called the slow side of a roller mill, with this improved device mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on line II-II, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line III-IH, Fig. 2.4 Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line IV-IV, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the fast side of the machine, showing how this improved device can be applied to the fast grinding rolls.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the housing of a roller mill having the hopper or intake 2 located thereon. Mounted transversely of the roller mill are roller shafts 3; the shafts adjacent the ends of the roller mill carrying the slow grinding rolls 4. On the inner shafts are mounted the fast grinding rolls 5. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, these grinding rolls run in pairs, the slow and fast rolls 4 and 5 being adjacent and running toward each other. Mounted above these pairs of grinding rolls is a dividing ridge 6 having its deflected sides 7 depending downwardly adjacent the center of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Mountedo'n the slow side of the mill, on the shafts 3, which support the slow rolls 4, are friction disks 11, said disks being in frictional contact with the friction drums 12 mounted on the horizontal shaft 13, said shaft being supported at its ends in the bearings 14 which bearings are in turn mounted to the side of the mill.
Depending from the bearings 14, are supporting brackets 15 in which are mounted rotatable adjusting bars 16. Said bars are held against longitudinall displacement by the collars 17, and are operable by the hand wheels 18 mounted adjacent one end of said bars. The bars are threaded from their opposite ends to the greater part of their length. Mounted on the inside of the friction drums 12, and forming a part thereof, are collars 37 having annular grooves 38. Mounted in said grooves are the depending shifting arms 19, the lower ends of the shifting arms being threaded forming nuts 20. Said nuts are in threaded engagement with the threaded portion of the adjusting bars 16.

Mounted in the center of the shaft 15 is a pulley 22 having a belt 23 mounted thereon, said belt transmitting power to the pulley 22 from the drive pulley 24 mounted on the line shaft 25, said shaft being mounted below the oor8, as shown in Fig. 3v Power, which is given to the shaft 23 from the pulley 22, in turn, is transmitted to the slow rolls 4 through the friction drum 12 and friction disk 11.
1n order to give the power to the fast rolls of the roller mill (as shown in Fig. 2) friction pulleys 26 and 27 are mounted on the inner shafts 3, said inner shafts of course carrying the fast rolls 5. rlhel pulley 26 is of metal, and the pulley 27 is constructT ed of paper or other analogous material;v said pulleys being in peripheral contact with each other. Mounted adjacent the pulley 26 of the shaft 3 is a driven pulley 28, said pulley deriving its power from the belt 29 mounted on said pulley. Said belt is driven from the drive pulley 30 mounted on the line shaft 25. ln this improved construction in varying the speed of grinding rolls, it is only thought necessary to vary the speed of the slow rolls, thus leaving the fast rolls at a uniform speed. But in the event of any desire to vary the speed of the fast rolls, a similar construction of frictional drum and frictional disk drive can be applied to the fast rolls, as clearly seen in the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, in which the supporting brackets 31 are mounted to the fast side of the roller mill, having bearings 32. Mounted in said bearings is a shaft 33 on which is mounted the drive pulley 34. 0n one of the shafts 3 ismounted a frictional disk 35, said frictional disk being in contact with the frictional drum 36 mounted on the shaft 33. rlhis construction affords means for varying the speed of the fast rolls.
In the present operation of roller mills, in order to meet the eXact conditions of wheats or other cereals, which vary according to atmospheric conditions and according to the different climes in which the grain is grown (for instance, the grain might be either' brittle or soft), the speed of the grinding rolls will have to be changed. For instance, if a miller has a quantity of brittle wheat to be ground, the speed of his grinding rolls will have to be decreased. Then, after the grinding of this brittle wheat, the miller might have a quantity of soft wheat to be ground when the speed of his grinding rolls will have to be increased to get the best grinding results.
The method now employedfor increasing or decreasing the speed of the roller mill is to elect pulleys of the proper diameters to give the required ratio of speed to the grinding rollers, especially to the slow grinding rolls. To do this, a large stock of pulleys of different diameters must be kept on hand to meet these conditions, which means that the mill has to be stopped and the desired pulleys mounted on the grinding roller shafts so as to give as near as possible the desired speed. This is very hard to do as the given diameters of the pulleys can only give a certain ratio of speed-no more and no less. lVith this improved manner of applying variable speed to the grinding rolls, and with the aid of the adjusting bar to adjust the friction drum to the concentric driving relation of the friction disk, the speed can be adjusted to a nicety and while the mill is in operation, thus enabling a more scientific grinding of the cereal to be made. As the results can only be seen from the conditions of the ground cereal after passing through the grinding rolls, if the condition of the ground cereal requires a light increase or decrease of speed, it can be readily done by the operator while the machine is in motion. Furthermore, with the present method of changeable pulleys for varying the speed of the grinding rolls, after the mill has been in operation a short while the friction caused by the passing of the cereal between the rolls has a tendency to put a brake on one of the rolls and increases the speed on the other roll, which is very objectionable to proper grinding. lVith this improvement, allowance can be readily made for this frictional contact action on the rolls from the cereal in the manner in which the operator can readily give the required speed while the machine is in motion to overcome this objection.
nasmuch as the present roller mills ob tain their varying speeds for the grinding rolls by the the interchanging of their different sets of pulleys, it will be readily seen how this improvement will be very advantageous in modern milling because of being able to quickly and readily obtain the desired speed to the slow grinding rolls in relation to the speed of the fast rollers, so as to give a perfect grinding action to the passing cereals.
lf it is desired to construct a roller mill so that the fast rolls can be driven independently and at varying speeds, and to have the slow rolls run at the same speed to each other, the positions of the fast and slow rolls will have to be changed, which will be by merely mounting the slow rolls (as shown best in Figs. 2 and 3) in the positions that the fast rolls are shown therein, and mounting the fast rolls in the positions in which the slow rolls are shown, and then mounting the disks 1l on the fast roller shaft on the fast side of the roller mill, along with the friction drum l2-mounted on the shaft 13, with its attachments, and transferring the friction pulleys 23 and 27 on the slow side of the roller mill and on the slow shafts, which will be merely a reversal of the grinding rolls and their driving attachments, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
`What l claim is:
l. ln a roller mill, the combination of fast and slow rolls, means adjacent the fast rolls for varying their speed, and means adjacent the slow rolls for varying their speed while said mill is in operation.
2. In a roller mill, the combination of fast and slow grinding rolls, means adjacent the fast rolls for varying their speed, and means adjacent the slow rolls for varying their speed in relation to the speed of the fast rolls, said varying means being operable without any interchanging of parts.
3. ln a roller mill, the combination of fast and slow rolls, said fast and slow rolls being driven independently of each other, and
means combined with the driving means of said slovv rolls for varying their speed While the mill is in motion.
4. In a roller mill, the combination of fast and slow rolls, said rolls being driven by frictional drive, and means adjacent said frictional drive for varying the speed of said rolls independently of each other While said rolls are in motion.
5. In a roller mill, a fast roll and slow roll, a line shaft, a countershaft geared to said line shaft, a slidable friction drum mounted on said countershaft, and a friction disk secured to said slovv roll, said friction disk adapted to be driven by said drum.
6. In a roller mill, a fast roll and a sloW roll, a line shaft, a countershaft geared to said line shaft, a slidable friction drum mounted on said countershaft, a friction disk secured to said sloW roll, said friction disk adapted to be driven by said drum, and independent gearing from said line shaft to said fast roll, said slidable drum and friction disk forming means for varying the speed of said slow roll.
7 In a roller mill, a pair of fast rolls, a pair of slow rolls, a line shaft, a countershaft, a pair of friction drums slidably mounted on said countershaft, a friction disk secured to each of said slow rolls, said countershaft being driven from said'line shaft, said friction drums adapted to operate said friction disks, and said slow rolls, means for shifting said friction drums on said countershaft While said slovv rolls are in motion, a friction drum mounted on each of said fast rolls, said friction drums of said fast rolls being in frictional contact With each other, said fast rolls being independently driven from said line shaft.
