To all UIIOH/ it may concern Be it known that we, I).\VID Romans and Knxxn'rlr lomia'rs, both subjects of the King of (ireat Britain, residing at Spittlegate Iron lVorks, Grantham, Lincoln, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in" Golf and like Clubs, of which the following is a specification.

()ur inv cation relates to improvements in golf-clubs and the like of the kind having interchangeable heads or striking faces, and has for its object to reduce the number of clubs or parts which must be carried while playing.

To this end our invention consists in providing a series of interchangeable heads so made and arranged that they can be at tached to the stick or shaft in either of two positions so that each head is the equivalent of two clubs.

In a suitable arrangement for carrying out the invention we provide the usual socket to which the stick or shaft is secured with an extension or head, preferably of a dovetail section, and disposed at a suitable angle relatively to the said socket or Stick,whiehangle. in the case of a golf-club, may be the average angle of the striking faces of the several forms of club required, such for example, as the niblick, cleek, mashie, driving iron, lofting iron, and putter. This dovetail or like socket extension is designed to receive the interchangeable heads, each of which for this purpose is provided at the back with a number of lugs which. together form the equivalent of a groove, of a dovetail or like shape, corresponding to that of the socket extension which is designed to fit into the same when the head is being attached to the stick. In practice, we advantageously provide three dovetail lugsnn each interchangeable head, two of which lugs constitute one side of the dovetail groove to be formed and are located near the outer edge of the head with a space between them, while the third lug is designed to to 'in the other side of the dovetail and is locat d at the center of the head. or in other words, between the first mentioned two lugs. By this arrangement ready access can be had to the groove to re move any dirt or the like which may enter therein.

For example. the said extension may be split longitudinaltv, preferably approximately at right angles to the face thereof on which the head rests, and .means may be provided whereby the said split extension may be 6O panded or opened out after the head is placed in position. Suitable means for this purpose comprise a lug which is formed at the rear of the outer end of the extension .anil-is fo!'mc(l.\\'ith a screw hole with which engages a screw, the en of which is tapered and enters a taper hole provided in the split end of the extension. By turning this screw the split ends are opened out. thus securely locking the loose head in place. The point of the screw may be arranged to enter a hole formed in the loose head in order to prevent the latter from being dragged oil the socket extension by rough usage. In some cases, the split extension may be formed with a 76 slightly raised or stepped surface on the dovetail faces near their outer ends as an add lional lock or means of security.

The driving face of each of the loose heads is formed at an angle with the back 80 face which is adjacent to.the split head, that is to say, the front or driving face is not par allel with its back face, so that by arranging the heads in the reverse way, a change of the angle of the driving face relatively to the shaft or stick is obtained: by this means each loose head is the equivalent of two ordinary clubs.

To enable the invention to be fully understood, we will (l(.--1 'l'll)e it by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a golf-club having a detachable and reversible head con structed according to the invention. Two of these holes 7) are provided. as shown, in order to allow of the re versal ol the liead with respect to the socket. \Yith this construction it will he understood that to attach a head (Z to the shaft (I, it is merely necessary to pass the dovetail exten tion (F of the socket 11 into the groove pro vidcd by the ligs 1 and g upon the head. and to then turn the screw m so at to force the taper end thereof into the split end or slot j of the socket extension 0. thereby opening out the said split end and caiising itto tightly grip the head.

To enable wear to he compensated for the screw-threaded hole I is made in a hush which is itself screwed in a hole in the lug! A. The hush 1" is made with a longitudinal slot 7* to receive a key. such as (1 Fig. 7 by means of which it can he turned to adjust its position in the hole in the lug iv.
