Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 8, 1915.
Application filed August as, 1913. Seria11to.'787,078.
T 'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Jones Amman, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to pliers, and has for an object to provide an instrument for bending a flat bar in the plane of its fiatv ness by applying force edgewise to the bar at a plurality of places and during the bending, preventing the twisting of the bar. This improvement is particularly useful in gentistry, especially for bending lingual ars.
One object of theinvention is therefore to provide lingual bar-bendingpliers.
In the drawings accompanying this specification one practicable embodiment of the invention is illustrated. r
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective a pair of pliers applied to'a bar which is being subjected to the bending operation; Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a bar and a longitudinal section of one of the beaks; Fig. 3 is a "iew similar but showing a bar of diflerent formation; and Fig. 4 is an end view of the pliers in the Fig. 1 position.
In the drawings the illustrative pair of pliers is shown provided with a pair of'jaws 1 and 2 having handles 3 and 4 respectively. The jaw 1 is shown provided with a pair of spaced apart beaks 5 and 6, and the jaw 2 is shown provided with a single beak 7 located in such a position thatit may normally pass into the space 12 between the beaks 5 and 6. Compared with the space between the beaks 5 and 6-, the beak 7 is relatively narrow. The beaks 5 and 6 are sufficiently widely separated that when the beak 7 passes into the space 12 there will be a constant wide clearance between the sides of beaks 5 and 6, and the adjacentv tive positions one to the other, and the beaks are also relatively disposed that the bar 9 to Fig. 2'
is engaged on the sidesll, 11 adjacent its edges and inwardly thereof, and thereby prevented from twisting when force is applied The beak 7 will act u on the bar at a position midway of the bea s 5 and 6,and will exert its bending pressure in its movement toward the space 12 between the beaks 5 and 6 in the direction of the longest axis, represented by 13 in Fig. 2, of the bar. It will thus be seen that the spaced apart beaks of one jaw engage the sides of the flat bar at one edge, and the other beak engages the sides of the bar at the other edge and thus flatness without any twisting whatsoever.- These pliers are useful in many employ ments, but are particularly useful in bend ing the lingual bar, which is frequently an oval or flat wire, into shape without leavin marks upon it. This is essentially a hand tool and is used by the dentist for fitting a lingual bar to the mouth of an individual patient. This work is frequently,- owing to the well known dificulties under which the dentist must needs operate, a series of fittings and bending, little by little, sometimes not enough, sometimes too much at one point, requiring bending the bar back to overcome thc'excessive bend. The bar during this bending and trying is several times re them. The bar after these bendingsand rebendings retains its original cross sectional formationand all parts remain in the original plane. Various gages of wire are employed in this class of work and these pliers will accomplish satisfactory results 'whenused on any of the various sizes. The
eased from the pliers and returned to In this example the bar is engaged at both sides at the edge. The impingement of the faces 10 of the socket upon the corners will effectively preventthe bar from twisting while being bent in the direction of its longest axis illustrated in this view by 16.
Although but one embodiment of the invention is shown, it will be apparent that this is illustrative of the invention, and that changes may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention I claim of their flatness wherein one jaw 'is provided with a pair of spaced apart beaks, each-having means for engaging both sides of a flat bar at one edge or inwardly thereof for preventing twisting of the bar during the bending operation, the other of said jaws being provided with a relatively narrow beak,..movable into the space between the beaks of the said pair with a constant wide clearance between the adjacent sides of the beaks, and having means alining with the engaging means of the pair of beaks for engaging both sides of the said bar at the other edge or inwardly thereof for preventing twisting of the'bar during the bending operation. 4
3. Lingualbar bending pliers having two jaws, one of said jaws being provided with a relatively narrow beak and the other of said jaws being provided with a pair of beaks located in position for the beak on the other jaw to pass into the space between them with a constant wide clearance between the adjacent sides of the beaks and each of said beaks being provided. with alined notches for engaging bars of various thicknesses for preventin lateral twisting of the bar during the hen ing of the same in the plane of its flatness.
