origtnatapm-icationmed ii'leeember m, 1912, Serial No. 736,347. Divided and this application filed February 21, 191 Serial No. 820,215. Renewed may 8, 1915. Serial 1W0. 26,903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mronenn'G. DELANEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented oer tain new and useful Improvements in Film- Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to film reels for moving picture machines of the type wherein the film is delivered if desired, at the center of the reel and withdrawn from the rim thereof, this being a divisional application of my co-pending application Serial #736,347, filed December 12, 1912, for film reels.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a View partially in side elevation and partially broken away and in section, of a form of reel that embodies the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section taken on or about line 11-11 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation looking at the inside of one of the plates showing the mechanism for locking the front and. back plates together;
and for expanding and contracting the core; Fig. 4 is a partial elevation of the cover showing the bayonet lock.
As herein shown, the reel is formed of a back plate 1 that is fixed on a tubular shaft 2 adapted to be rotatably mounted on any journal and turned by an application of a pro er crank to the notched ends of the shaft. A plate 4 is journaled on the shank in'parallel relation to the plate 1 and may be locked therewith as by a cam 8 on the lever 7 controlling the same mechanism shown in the other application Serial No. 736,347,
namely a spring pressed dog 37 and the notched periphery of the flange 5 on the shaft or other means for detachably locking the parts to turn together, may be used.
In this form of the device, a film as indicated at 25, may be inserted from the outside under a guide roller 26 to be drawn around a plurality of other guide rollers 27 that are carried on arms 28, the latter being springprojected in any suitable fashion with the 1ournals of the rollers playing in slots 21. The free end of the strip of film isdrawn cover 31 of thereel and is held thereby a I spring finger 32. Thereafter thelfilm is wound on by turning the plate-1 on its journal. Afterward the cover 31 is removed by partial rotation so that the heads of the pins register with the enlargements of the slots which form the bayonet lock 23, the plates 1 and 4 are then looked to turn together, and the film drawn ofi from the reel in the usual manner bymeans of the lever latch 7. In other words, this construction is particularly adaptable for feeding the film into the side opening of the reel and drawing it off from the periphery in a reverse direction to the method of winding shown in the original application, although this is not a necessary feature of the device.
As a result of this construction, the reel is readily filled and then unloaded without having to rewind the film, thereby saving time as well as wear and tear on the film.
Obviously, changes and details of construction maybe made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
I claim as my invention 1- 1. The combination with the wall of a film magazine provided with an opening therein, of a film reel comprising a back plate secured on a bearing member, a front plate provided with an opening, and journaled on the bearing member, means for securing the front plate to the wall with the respective openings in register, manually operable means for locking the plates and bearing member to ,turn together, a film guide extending from the opening of the front plate into concentric relation to the bearing member between the plates, a flanged cover adapted to be locked on the back plate and to encircle the front plate, and means for yieldingly maintaining a film applied to the reel in operative relation to the guide through the cover opening. p
2. A film reel comprising a bearing member adapted to be rotatably mounted on a suitable support, a back plate secured to the member, a front plate journaled on the member and provided with an opening means on the front plate adapted to hold a film that P passes through the opcning in operative relation to the bBHJIfi member and dates a n a between the plates for holding a cover removably securedon the back plate and encircling the front plate with a film opening therethrough, and means for looking the lates and member to turn together.
3. A m reel comprising a bearing member adapted to be rotatably mounted on a suitable support, and provided with a fixed side plate, a complementary side plate rotatably mounted on the bearing member in spaced relation to the other plate and provided with a film opening, guidin means 111 that passes through the plate opening in operative relation to the plates and bearing memher, a cover detachably secured on the fixed side plate around the other plate and provided with a film opening, and means for locking the rotatable plate to turn with the bearing member.
In testimony whereof I a'fiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
