ANCHORING DEVICE.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, SAMUEL R. PARADISE,
the production of an anchoring device.
especially adapted for use by fishermen, or in connection with row-boats, which will be of a collapsible nature, and of very light construction so as to adapt the same to be readily carried when not in use.
A further object is lthe production of a device as mentioned which will be of simple construction and efhcient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
rl`he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of an anchoring device embodying my invention, showing the mouth of the receptacle open, Fig. 2 is a v iew similar to Fig. l, showing the mouth of the receptacle closed, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section take on line g/-y of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a receptacle or bag 1 formed of fabric so as t0 permit of the same being readily collapsed and foldedv when empty. Said receptacle is open at its upper end, and provided in the lateral walls of said receptacle adjacent said end thereof are pairs of diametric openings 2 and 3, said openings being provided with metallic eyelets, as shown, for reinforcement.
The mouth of receptacle 1 is closed by means of a cord or other flexible element 4 which is fastened midway its ends to said receptacle as at 5 adjacentv the openings'. 2. The ends of said cord are then passed around the receptacle to the opposite side thereof, passed through the openings 3, being thence brought across the mouth of the receptacle and passed through openings 2, as clearly Speeiication of Letters Patent.

shown in Fig. 1. With this arrangement, it will be seen,'that closing of the mouth of the receptacle will be effected through pulling upon said cord ends, it being obvious that, when this is done, the mouth of the receptacle will be contracted in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2.
ln order to hold the cord ends against slipping, when the same are in closing relation with the mouth vof the receptacle, a locking device is provided consisting of two plates 6 and,7 between which the cord ends are adapted to Vbe clamped. The lateral edges of said plates are grooved to constitute channels for the reception of said cords, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and a bolt 8 and coperating thumb nut 9 are provided for pressing said plates into clamping engagement with the cord ends, as will be readily understood. By this arrangement, it will be seen, that after the mouth of the receptacle has been closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the plates 6 and 7 may be slid upon the cord ends into engagement with the adjacent side of the receptacle and locked in this position to eifectually prevent slipping of said cord ends and hence opening of the mouth of the receptacle.
Provided upon the outer side of the receptacle is a member 10 which forms a supplemental pocket 11 for the reception of the anchor rope l2, when the device is not in use, or other lisliing tackle of the owner. rilhe pocket 11 is equipped with a iiap 13 which may be locked in closing position by snap fasteners 14.
ln using the device, the receptacle l is iirst filled with sand, small stones or other heavy material, whereupon the ends of cord l are pulled outwardly, as above mentioned, to close the mouth of the receptacle. The locking plates 6 and 7 are thenslid to operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the ends of said cord 4, which are tied together, are connected with one end of the anchor rope. The device is now ready for use, being adapted to efectually serve as an anchor for the row boat of the user. When not in use, the receptacle l is emptied, in which case the same may be folded together in compact form so as to be readily carried.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
there being pairs of diametric openings provided in the lateral walls of said receptacle adjacent the upper end thereof; and a cord for closing said end of the receptacle, the central portion of said cord being secured to said receptacle adjacent the openings provided at one side of the receptacle, the ends of said cord being wrapped around. said receptacle to the opposite side thereof, passed through the openings provided therein, and being thence brought across the mouth of the receptacle and passed through openings provided in the `first mentioned side thereof,
substantially as described. I
2. An anchoring device comprising a flexible receptacle open at its upper side, there being pairs of diametric openings provided in the lateral walls of sald receptacle adjacent the upper end thereof; a cord for closing said end of the receptacle, the cen-- tral portion of said cord being secured to said receptacle adjacent the openings provided at one side of the receptacle, the ends of said cord being wrapped around said receptacle to the opposite side thereof, passed through the openings provided therein, and being thence brought across the mouth of the receptacle and passed through the open- `ings provided in the first mentioned side themouth of the receptacle, substantially as described.
3. An anchoring device comprising a flexible receptacle open at its upper side, there being pairs of diametric openings provided in the lateral'walls of said receptacle adjacent the upper end thereof; a cord for closing said end of the receptacle, the central portion of said cord being secured to said receptacle adjacent the openings provided at one side of the receptacle, the ends of said cord being wrapped around said receptacle to the opposite side thereof, passed through the openings provided therein, and being thence brought across the mouth of the receptacle and passed through the openings provided in the first mentioned side thereof, whereby said end of the receptacle will be contracted to closed condition, when said cord ends are pulled outwardly; and a pair of plates adapted to clampingly engage with said cord ends for locking the same in closingrelation with the mouth of the rec'eptacle, substantially as described.
